Exceptional Experiences in Telluride Mountain Village

January 30, 2010

Hi Folks,

Awesome snow and southwest Colorado sunshine, how does it get any better than this? The peaks are looking good these days:

After 37" of new dry powder last week, and a storm track that has favored the southern Rockies all winter, we offer the most exceptional alpine environ you can find.

Below is a picture of Upper See Forever and the Upper Plunge. The snow coverage is fantastic this year:

I caught this picture of See Forever Village today, which is a very nice property we rent to guests of Telluride Mountain Village:

Below is a picture of upper Revelation Bowl late this afternoon, which is one of the most beautiful and wonderful places to ski on earth:

Ski School report card time for the kids!

An afternoon sunshine run to Telluride Mountain Village can't be beat:

The Chondola and the Gondola run free for foot passengers until midnight seven days a week between Mountain Village and the Town of Telluride. No need for a car in this unique resort:

The mountain views can't be beat at Telluride Mountain Village:

Just before sunset, alpenglow warms the peaks:

A stroll in the evening is a must:

To the Hop Garden for apres' ski!

Or a little skating at the new Capella Telluride Hotel:

Or to the Spa at the Peaks Hotel:

The evening sky in Telluride Mountain Village is fantastic because a red-rock desert is just to our west, which allows for late alpenglow:

If you're interested in visiting Telluride Ski Resort, we arrange everything from lodging, ski lessons, dining, the best ski packages and off-slope Eco- Adventures through Telluride Resort Reservations -  which provides personalize attention and first-class concierge service. We offer a very large range of accomodations from homes, condos, studios, and hotels.

Give us a call at 800-778-8581 to experience the most exceptional ski vacation in North America.

Feel free to post a comment or question, we love to hear from you! - Dave

Hi Dave,

I thought I saw you outside Giuseppe's with a camera yesterday.

I concur on all points.  I just finished 4 great days of skiing.  I've never seen a more beautiful day then Friday.  Great snow, great terrain & great weather.  Wow!

The only thing I would add is that you have a lot of great people working at Telluride.  From the lift operators to the ski patrol, they're a friendly, helpful bunch.

TK

Dave's reply: Hi Tod, Of course there are great people in the Town of Telluride, and the ski area's slopes and lifts travel to both the Town and the Village. I'm just making an effort to explain what Mountain Village includes these days. Many people are familiar with the historic town, but are unfamiliar with all the things offered at the European designed Mountain Village. Additionally, our reservations department (Telluride Resort Reservations) and our property management company (Telluride Resort Lodging) book hotel rooms, condos, and houses in both the town and the village.

Where is Telluride Mountain Village I can't find it on any map. Also did I hear that a ski patrol got caught in an avalanche?

Dave's reply: Mountain Village is right next to the Town of Telluride, but up higher on the ski area. It is often referred to as "Telluride Mountain Village" - which is what the sign says at the entrance of Mountain Village Blvd. Both are connected with a gondola. There was a recent avalanche outside of the ski area boundary where a off-duty patroller was caught. Luckily, he's going to be okay.

Just wondering why Telluride ski resort feels like it needs to promote The mountain village and its lodging over the Town.

Dave's reply: Hi Mike, there are a lot of new hotels, restaurants, and amenities in Mountain Village which many people are not aware of. For example, I spoke with a ski group from the East Coast last night at a reception which was held at Mountain Lodge, and realized that most people don't know about all the new things that are happening in the village. The newer Mountain Village, combined with the historic Town of Telluride, make the destination very unique and attractive, but we have to explain to people who don't live here how it all works.

I was looking on the events page and it says that the Jim Drew Memorial FIS Race on Milk Run is taking place from Febuary 18-21.  Will entire milk run be closed for the event?

Thanks

Dave's reply: Hi Patrick, yes, Milk Run will be closed for the competition through the flats mid way down. Lower Milk Run (or Stumper as the locals call it) will be open.

Dave,

As an architectural connoisseur I am in awe of Telluride, and I think everyone who visits will be too.

I want to commend you strategically for taking the time to display Mountain Village. As you have said, "I'm just making an effort to explain what Mountain Village includes these days. Many people are familiar with the historic town, but are unfamiliar with all the things offered at the European designed Mountain Village."

I look at Mountain Village as the perfect compliment to the rugged and charming historic Telluride. And the amazing feature that keeps these two distinct areas harmoniously connected, to more than just skiers, is the gondola system.

Telluride transcends conceptions of an idealistic ski resort. The terrain is unmatched in North America, the architectural variety is unparalleled, and mind-blowing beauty crowns the finest resort destination in the world.

You are a truly blessed man, I admire your humble confidence.

Dave's reply: Hi Frederick, thank yor for your comments. I agree with how you describe the town and village and believe there is a story to be told about this wonderful alpine destination. This is clearly a place that is more than a traditional Rocky Mountain ski town.

Dave,

My family and I will be visiting Feb 12-18. We have been visiting Telluride since the mid-90s..We love the fact that as much as things change, its nice to know that our favorite things stay the same !! We started visiting Telluride as "singles" but now have a family 3 in tow (ages 10,8 and 5). Last year because of 3 different school schedules we had to travel last minute to Deer Valley. DV was fine, but I said on the flight home..."let's book Telluride 2010-right away!!"

Keep up the good work, and hope to buy you a beer sometime...  Regards, The Mullen Family.

Dave's reply: Thanks for coming back to Telluride. I'll be in town at that time so feel free to contact me at driley@tellurideskiresort.com, I'd like to meet the Mullen Family.

Dave: Promoting Mountain Village is a worthy endeavor and understandable for Telski which has two restaurants there.  I met two visitors yesterday who were staying at a hotel in mountain village.  They were somewhat disappointed, as they were led to believe that they were staying in Telluride, when they were actually a hotel shuttle and a gondola ride away.  Many tourists are happy staying in MV, but let's make sure they are well informed.  Calling MV "Telluride Mountain Village" is inappropriate.

Dave's reply: Hi Jerry, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Mountain Village is often refered to as "Telluride Mountain Village". For example, on the big stone entry way off the highway, there is a sign that says "Telluride Mountain Village" on the right. We also have the "Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association". I think the destination is more unique given the combination of the newer village and the historic town. It does get a little confusing in terms of communicating what the area offers to someone who has never visited. Hopefully this blog and the efforts of the Telluride Tourism Board (which by the way promotes both town and the village, although the village's name is not in their name)  will help ;)

ok, so you got all the powder last week then where are all the pictures of it?? where are the pictures of people shredding the 37" powder and having a blast? Your last blog looks like more of an advertisement than a blog of recent action on the mountain.

Dave's reply: Hi Clay, I was out of town at a National Ski Areas Association meeting when Telluride received the last series of storms which dumped over 3 feet. Because I take all the pictures and compose each of these blogs I was unable to cover it. Sorry about that.

I agree with the fact that tourists can b confused by mountain village trying to have it both ways by using telluride in their signage and literature. It smacks of mt. village trying to capitalize on the name "telluride", even though they decided to form their own separate town and entity. I like the fact that they are 2 separate towns, and believe it is good for each to be set up this way, but feel the ski area and mt. village should be more clear on this. Thanks again for all you do, and looking forward to the possible new disc golf course up there in the future!

Dave's reply: thanks for your input Steven.

Hi Dave,

My girlfriend and I are coming to Telluride this Saturday with 48 of our closest friends (we're running our ski club's trip to Telluride).  A lot of us have never been to Telluride before.  Where would you recommend having a group shot taken with great views that is higher up on the mountain yet accessible by novice skiers?

Thanks also for the blog.  I think it's a great way to express yourself about the mountain which you obviously love.  I look forward to experiencing Telluride myself.

Dave's reply: Hi Tom, thanks for choosing Telluride for your group's ski vacation.

I can recommend a few good locations for a group photo:

A) On the Meadows run, under the Chondola,

B) Just to the South of the top of the Coonskin Lift (7) next to the ski patrol building, looking over the Town of Telluride with the mountains in the background. The non-skiers or novice could ride the gondola up and walk 5 minutes to this location, then ski or walk back to the gondola station and ride back down to the village. That would be a spectacular location (we do lots of weddings in that location in the summer and fall).

3) Right in the Mountain Village base area on the snow in front of the Hop Garden.

4) At the top of Ute Park Express, there are easy runs down Sunshine Express or beginners could even download on Sunshine Express (10) by asking the lift operator at the top of the lift.

Have fun!

DAVE, I too would agree we need more accuracy in labeling things.  How about "MTN VILLAGE PRETTY CLOSE TO TELLURIDE".  Yesterday I rented a pair of skis that had turned up tips on both ends!!!  I think that is clearly misleading and perhaps even dangerous.  There should be a sign on the tale of the skis ..."WARNING...IF YOU CAN READ THIS SIGN YOU HAVE PUT THEM ON BACKWARDS".

Dave's reply: bindings didn't give you a clue? :)
