A Casual Day at Telluride Ski Resort

December 26, 2009

Hi Folks,

How good does it get spending time with friends and family in Telluride. Today was another beautiful blue-sky ski day. It's fun to tour around here - there is so much to see and do. Below is a possible route...

I like to head to the top of the mountain in the morning. Try a run from the top of Revelation to the Town of Telluride. 3,845 vertcial feet. You might want to stop by Alpino Vino on the way if you're a late riser and on vacation:

Or, swing by the historic Gorrono Saloon for a hot chocolate:

Then, maybe a lap or two on the Apex Chair (6):

Okay, maybe a easy run all the way down to the bottom of the Chondola at the Meadows:

Of course, a High Camp Warming Hut cookie run, at the top of Prospect Express:

Just following, travel over to the Revelation Observation Deck to take some nice group photos. This deck is a "must see" and is located at the bottom of the Revelation Chair, perched over a thousand-foot cliff with views in every direction:

For the fun of it, how about exploring some soft bumps on the west side of Gold Hill:

How about a quick rest and espresso at Alpino Vino in the afternoon? Elaine is going for it:

It's time for a lap down to the Town of Telluride, under the gondola, on Coonskin:

Wrapping up the ski segment for the day, it's back up the gondola for apres ski drinks and appetizers at Allred's - the nicest apres-ski view and dinner restarurant in the area:

It's probably time for a little shopping. Slide down to Mountain Village and swing by the newest boutique in the village, Telluride Naturals:

Telluride Naturals will introduce you to the greatest local products and art from the Telluride region. Locally grown and produced items you will find there include Bluecorn Candles from Ridgeway, Honeyville honeys, jams and sauces from Durange, Black Horse Essential soaps and lotions from Telluride, Pawlm candles from Montrose, James Ranch cheeses from Dolores, Tomboy soaps from Telluride, local photography, batiks, weavings, paintings and more.

Telluride Naturals is also the exclusive tasting and sales room for Telluride Vodka - expertly distilled with Telluride water - now featuring flavored vodkas such as carmel, cinnamon, and vanilla:

Below is a picture of Hanna Penberthy, who along with Ben Ladowski, will help explain the products and there orgins. Support your local producers - check it out:

Telluride Naturals is right next to the new ice skating rink in Mountain Village:

If you need logo items from Telluride, check out the new Telluride Resort Store. They've got all sorts of things like posters, stickers, shot glasses, pint glasses, tee- shirts, hoodies, Telluride post cards, etc.

The Resort Store is packed with fun stuff. Where else can you get a logoed Hop Garden pint beer glass or an Allred's coffee mug?

Between shops, I highly recommend a ride on the bungy trampline:

And, maybe a quick stop by the new heated outdoor bar at the Hop Garden:

Then, you might want to swing by the new Telluride Eco Adventures. This place is really unique:

The ski company created this store as part of its "Eco Tourism" initiative. It's set up to provide adventures for both adults and children. Inside, you'll find wonderful interpretive displays. For example, we've got gold and silver mining information, geological displays, animal pelts, skulls, animal tracks, and much more.

The mining history and interpretive displays are interesting for everyone:

Eco Adventures offers everything from guided snowshoe and nordic tours, to snowmobiling, ice climbing, heli-skiing, winter fly fishing, children's activities, and more. Today, the kids made their own snowshoes inside, then went outside and tried them out!

San Juan Mountain Bobcat display:

There is so much to do in Mountain Village, the Town of Telluride, and up in the beautiful San Juan alpine. Hopfully, this blog has given you a few ways to experience this great resort!

Please feel free to post comments or questions - we love to hear from you. - Dave

Dave,

My son and I are coming out there this week from Arkansas and skiing through New Years Day.  Any hope for Gold Hill Chute #9 being open ??  Also, how about Nastar racing??

Also,  if Chute #9 is closed for skiing are you allowed to hike up and scout it out or is the entire area totally closed even for hiking ??

 Thanks,

    David Blaske

Dave's reply: The last snowstorm came with high wind so the high Palmyra Basin is scoured out in places. Waiting for another storm to fix that. It is possible to hike up above the Revelation lift on the Gold Hill ridge to the top of #9 but it won't be open for skiing. Also, currently, when you pass the top of Revelation, you are considered out-of-bounds and there are no patrol services so I really don't recommend it unless you're equiped and prepared for such travel. Regarding Nastar, we've got some new plans for that location and I'll be posting on that soon. Stay tuned. Thank you, and enjoy your vacation in Telluride!

hey i was wondering what type of camera you use?

thanks

Dave's reply: I just switched to a Canon SLR Rebel T1i. I use different lenses in certain situations, such as a fisheye or telephoto zoom.

hey dave, I noticed that in your last post you referred to the "european Mountain Village"......what exactly makes MV european other than all the Audi's driving around?

Dave's reply: Good question. Design and architecture, pedestrian oriented, cars not parked in front of shopping and restaurants, several plazas with outdoor restaurants, aerial transportation links, etc.

Hey Dave, was wondering if there would be a hike involved to get to Majestic from Lift 14? I want to ski Revelation but not quite ready for top to bottom bumps.

Also, does the resort let long distance air-travelers receive a free lift ticket by showing a boarding pass on the day of arrival? I have skied in Utah and some resorts give a free lift ticket for the day you arrive to the resort, with the proof of a same day boarding pass of course. Thanks.

Keep the updates coming. Can't wait to see Telluride.

Dave's reply: There is no hike necessary from the top of Chair 14 to Majestic - it's all downhill. We don't have a free ticket program like you described. Thanks for choosing Telluide, you'll love it.

Hi dave,

I have been skiing in telluride all my life and SEE FOREVER has been a great run until last year when yall put the giant slow zone fence and the bottom of it where all the runs meet and go to misty maden. It creates a very big problem with pile ups of people and gets extremly icy and loose alot of speed. And for me a really good skier When i do come down from the high double black runs its the only thing on the mountain that is a problem and i have talked to alot of people about it and they feel the same way. If you could please work on that problem i would really appreciate it. Thanks again.

Dave's reply: It's a good thing to have that structure there, but they can open it up more, which I asked patrol to do. I skied it this morning and it looked much better.

Hi Dave,

Love the blog, especially this last article with a route to explore on the mountain.

I thought I had heard about a NYE event where the ski patrol comes down the mountain with torches/lights in the evening...am I imagining this? If not, what time does it begin and where?

snow on,

Sean

Dave's reply: Join us in the Mountain Village Plaza to kick off New Years Eve with the torchlight parade and fireworks show on Misty Maiden.  Activities start at 6:30 p.m.  The Hop Garden and Crazy Elk will be rock'n with food featuring drink specials.  The events are sponsored by the Telluride Ski Resort and Town of Mountain Village Owners Association.  There will also be a torchlight parade on the Town of Telluride side of the mountain at 6:30 p.m.

It's truly sad that you removed the half day option from your pricing.  We're hoping that it's a website glitch or something.  We live in Dolores and are not millionaires so we depended on the half day pass to ride your wonderful mountain.  Once we get dogs and gear loaded up and get up there, it's usually noon anyway.  Staying overnight in Telluride is not an option. We are seasoned riders but very rarely ride for more than 4 hours at a time.  I have already spoken with some friends and they feel the same way I do about it.  Eliminating the half day passes is a poor business decision in my opinion and will cause quite a few of Telluride's loyal locals to become Wolf Creek locals.

Also, I saw in the telegraph that you're thinking about adding other lifts and gondola's soon??!!!  How about keeping things the same for a few years and dropping lift prices down to something more reasonable?  The mountain is already epic and there's no way you could run out of fun stuff to ride in a week and you're already thinking about expanding???  Doesn't make sense to me.

Dave's reply: We have a ½ day lift ticket that starts at noon and you can start purchasing it at 11:50.

Regarding your other question, the USFS has asked that we update our master plan as the one we are operating under is 10 years old. We've been holding public meetings to gain input regarding the future of the ski area.

Dave, what is happening with lift 10 being closed today? The lines on #4 are insane.

Dave's reply: Hi Jim, yes, chair 10 closed today due to a part that broke in the lower terminal. We had it fabricated in Montrose today and they are installing it tonight. The lift should be a-okay tomorrow morning. The lift line at Chair 4 was crazy today due to #10 being down,,, I appologize for that. All should be back in order in the morning.

Ski Bum said:

Dave, just curious what the totals might look like for tomorrow? Has it been snowing all day? Any chances for Prospect hike to? Thanks

Dave's reply: Tomorrow is clearly going to be a epic powder day at Telluride. The hike-to terrain is not likely to open, due to considerable avalanche risks in those areas. Enjoy and be safe :)

We experienced our first family trip to Telluride this holiday season.  We had a blast and all the kids learned how to ski from the great instructors.  The views on the mountain were spectacular.  Mountain Village was a neet place to stay.

Hope to come back in the future.

BK

Dave's reply: Hi Brian, thanks for visiting Telluride and Mountain Village. Usually, when people come to Telluride, it becomes their favorite resort.

I was wondering when we might see guns put up on the park. It sounds like the superpipe is going to be located in good spot this season, which is exciting, but the park is traditionally more popular than the pipe. I know there are many of us hoping for some legitimate jumps before too long.

And YAY for the powder!

Dave's reply: We'll be announcing the plans soon..

Dave -- crazy busy day on Dec 31st, with prime conditions!  This is my first t-ride ski season, so wondering how the skier census compared to previous years.

Scott

Dave's reply: Hi Scott, the moon, stars, and sun must have all aligned because the ski area set a record for skier visits on 12/31 at 8,838. It is much quiter today and going forward, back to normal Telluride.

Ski Bum said:

Dave,

First of all, yesterday truly was an epic powder day!! Revelation is a heaven sent, leaving the rest of the hike-to virtually untouched all day, allowing for skiing enthusiasts such as myself to make 4 laps of untouched sweetness on baldy, so once again, revelation is heaven sent.

Second, concerning the massive lines that were present ALL day yesterday. Coming from Crested Butte I once upon a time remember a little something called a "Season passes only" line, that would work wonders for locals during the busy holiday seasons. Why this ever was abolished at ski resorts, baffles me to this very day. I mean it only makes sense right?? Season pass holders pay an incredible amount of money for their season passes, and on such a day as yesterday, "EPIC POWDER DAY", where there are.....what did you say.....8.838 skiers on the mountain?? Where two thirds of these skiers are visiting, most likely from the east coast and have no concern of the 17'' that feel last night and are more than content with skiing the groomers all day. These sort of lines makes for a huge BUZZ KILL for locals trying to get face deep in the fluffy white....But don't you worry, i've got a solution!! On busy holidays, or just all the time, I would recommend bringing back the season pass line..Just a suggestion of course.

Third, I do not want you to get the impression that i'm just some half brained, trust fund, unemployed, wealthy telluride local....because i'm not. I am a half broke college student living in Durango, so on days such as this when I half to drive all that way, I plan on skiing from 9-4, non-stop, and the lines don't help out in the least bit. But don't get me wrong either I think what happened yesterday at Telluride was absolutely fantastic!!! 8,838 skiers in one day is extraordinary, i'm just trying to beat around the bush and try and make everyone a little happier.....let the tourist stand in line, to ski groomers and look at the scenery, and let us die hard powder hounds lap the mountain with as little pain as possible!!!! Thanks for your time, and I apologize ahead of time for the long post, it's just something I had to say. Have a Happy New Years!!!

Dave's reply: Hi Ski Bum, Thanks for your post. I don't see having a "season pass only" lift line. Sorry. Telluride, normally has very minimal lift lines - we got hit last week but that's due to a holiday crunch, which is seldom.

Happy New Year to you also!!! And thanks for driving up from Durango - I realize that's a big deal.

I feel as if your blog today is a comercial for telski restaurants and buisinesses.

Dave's reply: Hi Scott, I can see how you might think that. On the other hand, why wouldn't we want people to know about our restaurants, retail stores, and Eco Adventures. We've got a big group of dedicated people who are working very hard to create excellent experiences for our guests at these businesses. They are very proud of the outcomes they are creating (as am I), and I think it's fine to give them some exposure through the TSG website and the blog. By the way, I left out the Wednesday night dinner sleigh rides to Gorrono - which is another wonderful thing to do when in Telluride :)

Susan said:

I must say that I have to agree with Scott.  We are second homeowners in the Town of Telluride.  My family and our guests were quite dissapointed with last nights torchlight parade while viewing from town.  And we had virtually no sight of the fireworks.  After talking to folks on the street today, it seems that there were probably twice as many people wanting to see the activities from town, than were in Mtn. Village.  I do understand that you need to promote Mnt. Village, but why exclude the people in Town?

Dave's reply: There were at least 1,500 people on the snow at the bottom of Chair 4. Telluride Mountain Villlage Owners Association also paid $10,000 for a fireworks display, which added a lot to the event.

We had approximately 75 people go down the Mtn. Village side, and approximately 50 people on the Telluride side. The ski schoolers do have a say in which side they want to go.

That doesn't sound like it was "biased" in favor of MV to me.

I have spent a lot of time on this mountain over the years, and I am really bummed that there isn't a legitimate park up yet. I have read a few previous posts and noticed that you mentioned updating a new post on the terrain park an pipe. Thank you for the new location for the pipe i have really high hopes for it, any idea how much tickets will be if there is night skiing in that area? Also, are Season Passes accepted or given any kind of discount for night skiing? I am also really pleased to see that most of the mountain was able to open so much quicker than last year, it really spread people out. But I have never seen Hoot's take so long to go up, I remember seeing the big features up before Christmas. Thank you for your time

Dave's reply: I understand your thought process. We're making some strategic changes and with that comes some re-allocatin of snowmaking resources. I'm going to post a new blog either Sunday or Monday and explain the Park/Pipe plans. Thank you :)

Hi Dave, any word on black iron bowl and palmyra peak getting controlled and open soon? It would be great to be able to have a heads up when it will most likely happen so that we can make sure we're there when it does. Thanks Dave!

Dave's reply: I'll keep you posted. Two storms ago we had a lot of wind, which stripped out lots of BIB, GH, and the Peak. This last storm really helped repair that as it came in with very little wind. We're getting closer to the hike-to terrain you're seeking up high.

# January 2, 2010 2:35 AM

Erik said:

On the interactive map some of the runs in black iron say they are open. Just wondering if the actually were before I head all the way up there.  Thanks

Dave's reply: Hi Erik, I looked at the interactive map this morning and it looks correct to me. BIB is open up to Genevieve.

# January 2, 2010 10:22 AM

Erik said:

On the Palmyra Map it shows Review, Jello Bowl, Dihedral Face and Westlake as being open.  All runs on Palmyra say "On Hold."  This may create some confusion if in fact it is only open to Genevieve. Is there hope of opening it further up this weedend?

Dave's reply: Hi Erik, Thanks for pointing that out. The sub-map "Palmyra" is not getting updated. I talked with some folks about that, as a result of your post, and we'll get it fixed. Thank you.

Congratulations on a robust New Year ski week.  Of course, I heard the moans about the "crowds" (even made a few of my own!), especially at the bottom of Prospect & on-mountain dining; and defensive skiing in some areas was a must.  Perspective: let's face it, the bills need to be paid, giving those fortunate to call t-ride their home hill an incredible overall season with world-class facilities! Also, I checked some of the blog posting for the I-70 corridor, sounds like the Vail resort group lift lines were insane!  Lastly, thanks for the mention of the off-hill options, we are fortunate to have this type of retail in such an off-the-beaten-path area.

Scott (Ridgway, CO)

Dave's reply: Hi Scott, it's a busy time of year at all ski resorts. I remember several years ago I was at another ski resort in Colorado (won't mention) and it took me 2.5 hours to get to the top of the mountain for the first run. It happens, but usually is just a few days a year at most resorts, particularly destination resorts like Telluride. Anyway, I was out skiing today and it was back to uncrowded runs and liftlines, which is normally the case for Telluride as we're kind of a fly-in "ski week" type resort.

hello dave, me and my fellow team riders in the tabasco crew have been wondering for quite a while why this season the terrain parks of telluride have been reduced to small dinky parks with lets be honest bullshit features, Im not saying the parks arent fun, they're just getting monotone and boring, I know it must be chalenging to deal with any terrain parks after your crew just got over building the impressively massive world cup course, and i greatly respect your discission to put up a park at all this early in the season, we just want to know when work will  begin on the upper jumps and advanced rail options we saw last year in the hoot brown terrain park.

Keep it healthy, Tabasco Crew.

Dave's reply: Hey, keep the hot sauce to mild on my blog!

Anyway, we've got some interesting plans and changes in the works. I'll be posting a new blog on this Sunday or Monday. Stay tuned.

Hey Dave,

I was just wondering what your upcoming plans are for the terrain parks/rumored super-pipe as well as what's going to happen with the Nastar area.  I really liked the Polar Queen Park last year as a progression to the big Hoot's jumps, as well as the jump line on lower Misty the year before.  Also your staff did an amazing job holding everything together throughout the crowded madness over the past week.

Dave's reply: Hi Parkrider, I'm going to be posting a new blog most likely Sunday or Monday on this. Stay tuned.

As for the "crowded madness" earlier this week,  I think we're all just a little spoiled around here. It was 1/3rd the size of a "normal" holiday crowd at our competing ski resorts up north. Anyway, back to normal Telluride quiet slopes and lifts now :)

Hi Dave,

My husband and I are aplanning a trip during March. He is an avid skier and I snowboard, but am not that experienced. I have been reading blogs that say Telluride is for more advanced ski/boarders is this true? Should I not waste my time until I get better?

Dave's reply: Hi Patti, take a look at our trail map. The Sunshines Express is a gigantic area (2 mile long lift) with very easy, wide, long trails. The Chondola, as well as Ute Park are all really great for novice riding too. I think you'll like Telluride. We do have a reputation for our advance terrain, because we have a lot of it too, but we also have easy terrain.

How would rate the current conditions of the slopes between 1 and 10?

We are arriving on the 18th of Jan and very excited!! I heard you all were not getting as much snow as past seasons...is this true? Can you also recommend a nice place not too pricey to have a nice dinner? The sleigh ride you spoke of, were can I find out more info.

Thanx

Dave's reply: Hi Pam, the snow on the runs in the areas of Chair 10 and 1 is in really good shape. I think you'll be pleased. The best deal for dinner is "Dollar Taco Night" on Friday nights at Big Billie's, located at the bottom of the Chondola (chair 1). Also, I like the pizza at Crazy Elk - they've got two brothers who make the crust by hand, etc. It's great.

I wasn't sure if I should post this question here or on the most recent blog.  My wife and I will be out there in late March and would like to visit Alpino Vino.  My wife is more accomplished at the wine drinking than the skiing if you know what I mean.  It appears to me that Alpino Vino is not accessible by green slopes so I was wondering are there ways for the novice skier to get there and enjoy the ammenities?

Dave's reply: Hi Corey, there are only blue runs to and from Alpino Vino. I have an idea though. Send me your email address to driley@tellurideskiresort.com Thanks.
