Final Weekend Powder Dayz, And a Great Season to Remember! *photos updated 4/14*

April 12, 2009

Hi Folks,

We'll, all good things must come to an end. Many locals and a few out-of-towners showed up for a spectacular powder weekend. Twenty inches of new snow fell in the last 48 hours and the face-shots where plentiful today ;-)

I'd like to start out by thanking all the staff who worked this last "bonus" week. It was fun to see everyone chip in and the teamwork was awesome!

In typical Telluride fashion, the powder line was full of happy locals this morning. Below is a picture of Captain Jack and Larry Iverson, first in line on closing day:

Every chair was pretty much full on the Plunge all day:

Can you find the always stylish Plum powder girl, Ramona Bruland on the lower Stairs in this picture?:

The F&B crew did a great job putting out some Mai Tai drinks, pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, sliced brisket, and everyone packed into Giuseppe's - just like always! Looks like we've got a new rock star in Telluride :)

Dina, you can't move to Hawaii, you must come back to Telluride. Go stick your feet in the sand and splash around in the ocean for awhile if you must, but come back! It just won't be the same without you!:

A diet of Black Bean Saute, PBR, and Mai Tai. Giuseppepalooza!:

Good times and good friends:

Cheers to a great season:

The little house that could. Did you know that Giuseppe's used to be a restarurant at the bottom of Coonskin (Chair 7) in the old days? When I was a college kid, I remember buying toasted bagels with cream cheese out of that building 25 years ago at the base area at 7:

This has been a season of great memories and accomplishment. We started out with new state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment on Misty Maiden which really helped us open with a great base on time:

Of course the big news of the season was the new Revelation terrain expansion and new quad lift. Below is a picture of the kamikaze downhill when the rope was dropped on the first day Revelation was opened. Those are people, not trees! It was pretty wild seeing all those people charging down Reve! If I recognize the coat, doesn't that look like David Glynn in the foreground?:

The new observation deck at the bottom of Revelation Bowl turned out great too. This was also opening day as the blue sky emerged. Aren't we all glad we never saw another lift line like that? That's scary!:

Big thanks go out to the Forest Service for helping with the Revelation expansion. Below is Judy Schutza, District Ranger and Scott Spielman, Permit Administrator. I'll bet Scott hiked Revelation Bowl a few dozen times last summer and fall as he administered the project. He's got his thumb print on the bowl for life, which is pretty cool. By the way, I know the unload ramp at the top didn't work well, and we've got a plan to fix it up this summer. Please accept my appologies!

We dedicated "Bee's Run" in Revelation Bowl to Bee Reichel last month. Bee and her husband Frank have been an important part of this community for decades. This was a great event attended by many of her friends.

The new Hop Garden in Mountain Village was a big success. Thanks to Mountain Village for permitting us to expand the patio!:

Alpino Vino, the world's highest wine bar, was also very well received. Thanks to San Miguel County for the special use permit!:

Once again, the ski patrol did an outstanding job getting the mountain open and keeping it safe. We installed 2 howitzers with nice new buildings in order to help with the avalanche control work (a project Sterbie has worked on for decades), but without their talent and dedication the big guns would be worthless. These folks have developed cutting edge data, practices, teamwork, leadership, and results. We have over 70 folks on the TSP team now. This picture was taken at the top of Gold Hill last Monday. Pat Ahern, Eric Larson, Craig Sterbenz, Matt Steen and I took a run into the Creek to discuss the snow study they've been working on in that area:

Remember the train of people hiking Palmyra every sunny day? I asked Sterbie how many days it was open this year. He said it was a little over 40. Skiing Palmyra Peak has become a signature experience at Telluride. Awesome work!:

Gold Hill #1 was opened for the first time this winter:

I realize the Goat Trail from the bottom of Gold Hill #1 to the top of #1.5 didn't work very well. Below is a picture of it from last fall as it was being built. It gets wind striped pretty bad as it faces southwest, and I realize it needs tweaking. We're developing some new ideas to try and get this to work better. We'll get at it this summer:

I can't close this blog out without thanking the entire Telluride Ski and Golf team. We have 30 departments and 1,000 employees in the winter. It's an enourmous undertaking for everyone on the front line and through management to create the outcomes our customers expect from a world-class resort. I'd like to thank each and every one here and now but, well, that would take some typing! Seriously, we made great strides this year and I'm very proud of everyone. THANK YOU!:

Additionally, I want to sincerely thank our locals, second homeowners, visitors, and all the employees that work in all the stores, bars, restaurants, hotels, service organizations, and governments in the region. It's a team effort and collectively, we create the wonderful experience people think of as "Telluride". There are great people in this community, and I'm blessed to be a part of it. Thank you.

Please feel free to post a comment to this blog. We love to hear from you! Just scroll to the bottom, type away in the dialog box, and hit submit.

Have a great summer.

Kindest regards,

Dave Riley

P.S. Thanks Elaine, for all you do.

It's really amazing how you guys have transformed Telluride Ski Area for the better over the last few years. Thanks for all the innovation and for making it happen Dave. The extra week and the powder this weekend was great. That was a nice thing to do for the locals. Good to see you in the lift line this morning too!

Dave's reply: Thanks Dan. It's our pleasure!

Dave,

Thanks for the extended season!  I hope it was profitable and/or got Telluride some great publicity so that you might do it again next year!!  All the employees were great this year and a special thank-you to the salaried employees who kept the area running this last week.  The crew at Gusiseppi's this week was fantastic - maybe they should work there all season:-)

Oh, and thanks for the powder on closing day :-)  How did you arrange that?

Waiting for next season,

Gary

Dave's reply: Hi Gary, Thank you for recognizing the TSG staff. See you in November.

Dave,

You have done an outstanding job with Telluride over your short tenure.  The terrain expansion is almost under the radar on the national scene.

We can now be on 2 incredible ridges with so many options

1. Gold Hill - access to Bear Creek/Gold 6-10

2. Palmyra - La Rosa, Westlake, Dihedral, Palmyra

Gold Hill 1 is great - however you are dumping so much traffic into the face/rocky area of Andy's that it is getting scraped.  You need to get that Goat Path to 1.5 working.  I understand Honga took a bad roll in there?

Hop Garden is good.  However, you guys under-achieved so, so long in that space.

Trommer's/Alpino Vino.  Is it true that the cheapest glass of wine is $18/glass? I never stopped in since that was the reputation.

Ticket Price.  It is ridiculously high.  I try to advise every visitor a way to save.  6-packs/10-packs/T-cards/employee 1/2 price tickets....anything to get away from the $100/day sticker shock. There are too many other - perhaps better - things one can do with a $100 besides ski.

Anyways - good season Dave.

It was kind of you to keep the mountain open for a week for just the locals.

Dave's reply: Hi Chris, Thanks for your input. We believe the "value" of skiing Telluride is high. Look at the lead ticket price compared to a round of golf at a nice course, or a dinner out at a nice restaurant, etc.  Have a great summer!

Nice post for the end of the season--just pulled my gear out of TL till next Nov. and will be in HI next week too.  Still miss you out here on the WC, but one must share great managers if we are to raise the bar in that category!  Seems you're doing a great job at T-ride--congrads.  What is the new news about B-creek?  By the way, I never did hear if you got the Whistler Valley bike trail map I gave your sales mgr. when he was out at the ski show in PDX last Nov..  You said you were working on a similar plan at T-ride--good luck.

Dave's reply: Hi sds, always nice to hear from you.

So, the BC study has gone really well. The patrol accomplished more than I expected in terms of putting the avalanche atlas together.

I asked one of our Sales Mgrs. about the map and he did not recall getting it, but there was another mgr there and he's off today. My guess is he has it. We're still playing with the idea. There seems to be a desire in the community for a managed MB park at some level.

Have a great summer!

Dave, after becoming a regular to your blog last summer, with all the great pictures and comments, I got to come and see for myself what "Unmatched in North America" meant.  I left knowing the secret--World class terrain with NO LIFT LINES! My friend Jim and I skied 20,000 feet the first day: Wow!  We hiked Palmyra and rode it twice (it was rough because were from Kansas).  I don't know if you got my last blog comment in March--not sure it sent--but great job to you and your staff.  See you next year!

Dave's reply: Hi Mike, Glad you were able to experience Telluride. Enjoy your summer and we'll see you next year!

Now what?     Oh yea, my son has a school project on how lifts work. Can you fax me a detailed schematic on how they operate and where the on switch is? Thanks.

Oh yea, thanks for the extra week.

Dave's reply: That's good :)

Dave,

Thank you for keeping the area open for an extra week, and we got the new snow to boot.  The two lifts were perfect. Maybe lift 8 next year?  My friends and I had a great time skiing together for the extra week- it was like our own mountain.  Let's do it again next year.

Best,

Jake McTigue

Dave's reply: Hi Jake, Glad you enjoyed the skiing. The powder on Sunday was awesome! The reason we ran 7 instead of 8 was because the parking lot is at the bottom of 7 and the additional terrain over there was then available because 7 was running.

My wife and I skied all the major resorts in Colorado this season and Telluride was our most favorite by a long shot. You've got the best terrain, mountain views, employees and grooming. Revelation Bowl is the most beautiful place we skied all year. The groomed route off the top was perfect for us because it is not too steep. We love Alpino Vino, what a great idea. The food was incredible and the ambiance can't be beat. The new Capela Hotel in Mountain Village is beautiful too. We'll be coming back next year.

Dave's reply: Hi Eric, Thank you for visiting Telluride. You've outlined why Telluride is Unmatched in North America! Have a great summer and we'll look for you next season.

P.S. Summer in Telluride is very nice too. We have several festivals, a great golf course, many spas, great hiking, etc. You might want to give it a try. The locals say "they came here for the skiing but stayed here because of the summer".

I luv the Hop Garden! The $2.50 New Belgium pints at apres ski brought us back many times and the burgers are the best in Telluride. Cool umbrella also. That's going to be great this summer!

Thanks for opening the new terrain over the past few winters. Telluride has changed so much!

I wasn't around for the last week but everyone in town is talking about it. That was a great thing to do and I hope you do it again.

Dave's reply: Thanks for your kind comments Annie. See you under the yellow umbrella this summer! It is going to be great.

Dave,

Thank you very much for all the improvements to the ski area this year, It is so awesome! Also I was thrilled to have the ski area open the extra week in April. I only wish next year there was one green run available for my kids who have their Spring break the 2nd week in April. They found Telluride Trail too difficult for their skill level and refused to ski. Thank-you for anything you can do in this regard.

Dave's reply: Hi Ted, without opening more lifts, I'm not sure how to do that. There are so few people left in town at that time of year, it's difficult. We pulled it off this year by just running the two lifts. My impression is that it worked some days and other days it was a bust.

Hi Dave-

I will be out there this summer to ride and was wondering if there is a map of the cross country trails available on "the mountain" with access available from the top of the gondola?

Can you explain what a "managed MB park" might be? Sounds interesting.

Also, will the Telluride Trail be open to mountain bikers this summer. I never quite understood the reason form closing it to cyclists.

Thanks.

Dave's reply: Hi Craig, Thanks for returning to Telluride this summer! There is a map. You can pick it up at any bike shop or at the top of the gondola. Mtn. Bike parks usually include all or some of the following: Downhill trails(gravity), cross country trails, freestyle trails. Managed parks usually have people who maintain the trails and there is a fee associated with it all. At this point, T-Trail is closed by the Forest Service.

Great ski season. The new terrain with the backcountry access has really spread everyone out.  GH1 is one of the best lift service ski runs around. Even with the goat trail not working as well as hoped the traverse back into rose bowl was great. I hope Telluride continues to expand.  One addition I hope to see is Gold Hill 3. It the longest best run off of that ridge. No cliffs just 1500 feet of pure steep skiing. Have a great summer

Mike

Dave's reply: Hi Mike, I was just talking with Patrol recently about that. More on that later. Have a great summer in Telluride!

Dave,

Thanks for an amazing season! It was a little depressing since I had a couple days left on my 10 day but oh well. The crew did an awesome job! Looking forward to next season. What did the YTD snowfall end up being?

Tim

Dave's reply: Hi Tim, Look like we received 312" of snow and the max settled base was 89". See you next season! Have a great summer.

Mr. Riley, you have re-positioned Telluride to be very successful in the next 10 years. Most people around the country and internationally are still unaware of how incredible the ski area has become over the last few years. Honestly, all the sudden, Telluride has become the nicest ski resort in Colorado, and Colorado has some of the best skiing in the states. Nice work.

Dave's reply: Hi Franklin, Thanks for you kind blog comments. I owe everything to the team I work with at TSG. They make it all possible.

Please keep these great passes available and reasonable for your neighbors. We tell everybody over here.Your staff and you are doing a great job.

Mike

Dave's reply: Hi Mike, Thanks for joining us on the final weekend! I remember seeing you and the Durango folks in the first lift line. The conditions sure were nice. See you next season and enjoy your summer!

Made it for closing day!!!! 7:30am flight out of Philly, landed in Montrose at 1:00, on chair 7 at 3:20! Great day! I am curious about the results of the snow study in Bear Creek? Any initial thoughts?

Dave's reply: Hi Snowball, That is so funny :) I'm glad you were able to make that work!

It's too early to chat about the Bear Creek Snow Study. We're still working on it at this time. I don't mean to be elusive, we just need to finish up some work first. Thanks!

Hey Dave, It was great to see you in the powder line on closing day.  Thanks for the extra week.  It seems to have gone very well in every aspect.  Out of curiosity, does TSG plan on constructing any more single-track trails like the Village trail or Prospect trail this summer.  If so, is there a way to volunteer on trail construction?  Any more thoughts on building a mountain bike park?  The bandwagon with ski resorts is to open gravity oriented bike parks on their terrain during summer months.  The popularity of these parks is growing every year.  Bikers are spending thousands of dollars on their bikes and on traveling to these parks.  We would have the only park within hundreds of miles.  Think about it.  It would pay off greatly for this town and its economy.  It would make hundreds of locals very happy, and would bring in people from all over.  Chair ten area is perfect for a park.  Ive included my email address if you would like to communicate directly with me.  Thanks for your time.

Dave's reply: Hi Adam, We had a meeting with the forest service, the mayors of the two towns, TMVOA staff, and the rec director for TMV last week. We're still working on it. Stay tuned.

Dave, we are considering coming up from Phoenix this summer and was wondering if the gondola's or lifts that operate haul bikes up.  I am not sure if this is the same question as Ari had as I am not concerned about a "Park", just want to know if I can ride down the hills on trails.

Thanks

Dave's reply: Hi Mark, Yes, the gondola provides free uphill access for mountain bikes. The designated trails for mountain biking are all on the Mountain Village side (at this time). The Prospect Trails was built just a few summers ago and is truely one of the best cross country trails you'll ever ride in the mountains. Guest Service folks are stationed at the top of the gondola and can answer any questions you have. Enjoy!
