Ski Season is Coming!

November 15, 2008

Hi Folks,

I'd like to update you on how things are progressing toward the 2008/2009 ski season. Telluride is rolling out a number of innovative changes that are in the final stages of completion.

First, our exciting new Revelation lift is complete and ready for public operation! All the inspections have been conducted and the new lift passed with flying colors. A big THANK YOU goes out to the Leitner-POMA crew for doing a spectacular job. Many members of the Telluride Mountain Department staff also deserve accolades for their exceptional work on this project. THANK YOU! I want to also thank our partners at the US Forest Service. Scott Spielman, Kathy Peckham, Judy Schutza, Cory Wong, Charlie Richmond, and Ken Kowynia have been great to work with on these projects. Building at 12,500 feet in a short construction season at a remote location has its challenges, but everyone pulled together and exhibited extraordinary teamwork.

Below is a picture taken from the top of the new Revelation Bowl. As you can see at mid-day, the bowl is in the shadow of Gold Hill. The wind generally comes from the back side of the peak so this bowl always gets more snow than most anywhere else in the ski resort. These factors will keep the snow soft and pillowy down the center. If you look carefully you can see the historic Town of Telluride down in the box canyon:

Telluride now has one of the largest vertical drops in the country at 4,425' (3,845' lift served). Below is a picture of the completed upper terminal of the new Revelation lift:

As the picture below shows, the Telluride Mountain Department staff built a new skiway to exit the new bowl. It turned out very nice. You can see the new Revelation Bowl and lift in the background.

Late last week the staff did a "load test" on the new lift. This is when the chairs are loaded with bags of sand, and the lift is run for several hours to mimic live operations. The staff had the pleasure of laying down first tracks in Revelation Bowl on their way to work at the bottom terminal as the picture below illustrates. This new bowl offers world-class alpine terrain - nice!

The Telluride Ski Patrol has completed two new buildings and acquired two new 105mm vintage 1942 Howitzers. The guns were completely refurbished by the US Army on a base in Nevada before being recently shipped to Telluride. This has been a multi-year effort by our esteemed avalanche expert Craig Sterbenz. Sterbie deserves a huge amount of credit and thanks for his persistence and tenacity in pursuing his vision over the years to execute an artillery avalanche program at Telluride Ski Resort. This program will deliver explosives in a much more accurate and effective manner, improving safety for our patrol staff as well as our guests.

Below is a picture of one of the guns in prospect basin:

Snowmaking has been running full blast for a few weeks. Improvements to the system this year are yielding very good results. Below is a picture of the base area at Heritage Plaza in Mountain Village:

Snowmaking at the top of Polar Queen Express (Chair 5) is also going well:

Big piles of snow have been blown between the top of Polar Queen Express and the Apex Lift (Chair 6). The snowcats are going to start spreading the piles next week:

Snowmaking at work on Village Bypass:

This summer, we acquired a new Techno Alpine snowmaking tower and mounted it on an articulating arm on lower Misty Maiden. This machine is fully automated and automatically adjusts the air/water mix as the temperature changes through the day and night. The arm allows the gun to swing around and cover a very large area. This is new state-of-the-art snowmaking technology:

Here's another photo of this big bad boy:

A beautiful morning in Mountain Village - can't wait to ski on Thanksgiving Day!

Grooming crews have been packing the snow on the west side of Gold Hill to develop a consolidated base. They yoyo a custom "roller" with a winchcat to pack the snow so that the base is consistent and stable. It's a fascinating process:

We've also taken delivery of 3 new state-of-the-art Prinoth snowcats, including another Sherpa winchcat. These machines put down the best corduroy possible. Telluride has a perfect mix of terrain with 23% beginner, 36% intermediate, and 41% advanced/expert. Our commitment to perfect corduroy is absolute:

As I covered in my last blog, we're opening two new bowls this ski season (Revelation and Gold Hill 1). Below is a picture I took a few weeks ago (before it started snowing) that shows Gold Hill 1 and the lower apron we call Gold Hill 1 1/2. I've drawn in the boundaries including the new lateral "goat trail" we constructed that connects the upper and lower terrain:

Below is a picture of Revelation Bowl from last ski season (before the new lift was constructed this summer). Revelation Bowl is on the left, Gold Hill 1 is off to the right:

Below is a picture my friend Brett Schreckengost took last spring of Gold Hill 1, with Palmyra Peak in the background. Telluride has the reputation as the most scenic ski resort you'll find - I agree! Nice alpenglow:

We've also added two new restaurants this year, one high on the mountain and one in Mountain Village.

Alpino Vino is a European inspired wine bar which is located high on the mountain just off the See Forever Run. Below is a picture taken last summer. We're in the middle of a complete interior renovation of this beautiful little stone building right now. New restrooms are also being constructed in a separate building to the right. Alpino Vino is scheduled to open by the Christmas holiday:

In Heritage Plaza, right at the bottom of the Village Express, we're in the process of completely renovating another restaurant we have renamed the Hop Garden. This restaurant will have seating for 120 people outside and 110 people inside. All new furniture inside and out, a new bar, new restrooms, new flooring, new flat screen TVs, and 10 craft beers on tap along with an excellent menu will be offered. The Hop Garden will be a open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Below is a picture of the exterior but we still have more accessory work to do such as signage, flags, umbrellas, etc.:

Mountain Village is also launching two new luxury hotels; scheduled to open this ski season! One is called lumiere, the other is called Capella.

Below is a picture of the new boutique hotel - lumiere. I took a tour last week - it's a very impressive addition to Mountain Village. The new high-end hotel is scheduled to open December, 2008. The property is ski-in ski-out and located just steps from Heritage Plaza, the Village Express, shopping, restaurants, and the Gondola. It has a mix of hotel rooms, condos, and penthouses with 28 total units:

Below/center is a picture of Capella. This property is scheduled to open mid-February, 2009 and is located right on Heritage Plaza. This hotel has about 150 rooms including 90 hotel rooms plus condos and penthouses of various sizes. It has an outdoor ice skating rink, retail stores, spa, and three restaurants:

Also, the Peaks Resort & Golden Door Spa has re-painted and replaced all the furniture in 150 hotel rooms this fall. Below is a picture they sent me of the renovated rooms - they look nice and new. The ski-in ski-out property has a giant spa with a big indoor lap pool, as well as another big pool that is partially indoors and partially outdoors with a water slide inside. There are many treatment rooms, weight room, cardio room, etc., etc. The Peaks is also just steps away from Heritage Plaza:

There are so many other beautiful properties for rent in Mountain Village and the Town of Telluride. Mountain Lodge, Inn at Lost Creek, Bear Creek Lodge, Camel's Garden, Fairmont Franz Klammer Lodge, Hotel Columbia, Hotel Telluride, the New Sheridan, the Ice House, San Sophia and more.

If you're interested in lodging information in either the Town of Telluride or Mountain Village, please call our Central Reservations Department at 1-800-778-8581 for comprehensive personal attention. Our reservation specialists will help you book anything from a hotel room, condo, or beautiful house. We handle bookings and property management of units in both Mountain Village and the Town of Telluride and will package lift tickets, help you book ski lessons, daycare, make reservations at Allred's restaurant (best in Telluride) or even a dinner sleigh ride to Gorrono Ranch, etc.

If you're a resident, we hope you enjoy all the new improvements your local ski company has "imagineered" and executed this year.

If you're thinking of visiting Telluride, we invite you to experience the greatest ski resort in North America. There are many reasons to choose Telluride for your vacation this year. As you can see, we've made a number of improvements with the intent of creating the optimal ski vacation for you.

Please feel free to post a comment or question - we love to hear from you! Just scroll down to the dialog box, type away, and hit submit. I'll reply promptly.

Thank you so much for your interest and support. - Dave

Amazing work Dave and staff.  It is going to be a great season. Can you tell us what terrain and lifts will be open for Thanksgiving day.  I can not wait to get back up there, and the pictures look great.

Gobble, Gobble

Dave's reply: Hey Mr. Turkey Man, Thanks for the post. The staff has done an outstanding job, thank you for recognizing them - it means a lot.

I'm really not sure what we'll have open on Thanksgiving Day. But, I know that what we open will be very good from what I'm seeing. We'll at least have Village Express and the Chondola but hopefully more.

We're way ahead of last year with natural and man-made snow though - which is nice.

Stay tuned!

Hey Dave,

First of all, I'm super stoked on all the improvements being made this year and I'm hoping with the right conditions, Telluride will be better than ever, so thanks a lot for all your work.

Secondly, I was just wondering if there was anything cool being planned for the terrain park during the holiday/christmas time. I'm kinda interested in what kind of large features might be up and ready to go by then.

Thanks

Zach

Dave's reply: Hi Zach, I'm sure we'll have lots of rails and jumps up by then. The beginner features are relocated to Ute Park this year, intermediate features on Polar Queen, and of course the advance features at Hoot's.

Hello, Dave!  I've been waiting since last April to hear those words again!!  If skiing in your minds-eye counts, then I've skied every day this year!!!

My family and I are planning on 15 - 20 days at Telluride this season, so seeing these photo's couldn't have come at a better time.  We may also try to sneak in for the opening weekend if another run or two opens...we are praying for snow!  Thanks to you and your crew for all the hard work and, as always, I look forward to your blog updates.

Thanks again and we'll see you soon,

Jim

Dave's reply: Hi Jim, Thanks for checking in.

We'll open everything that has a good base for you and everyone else here for the turkey and the turns  =)

It's going to be an incredible season at Telluride with all the improvements we've launched. Enjoy!

hey dave,

powdermag.com is currently running an article about a transceiver gate being made by mammut, that is being used on the west coast this winter.

dont know if you have already researched this idea but thought it might be an option for telluride ski area.

charles

Dave's reply: We've done some research on that but the standards are to notice people at the gate that they are leaving the ski area managed area.

Are the parks going to be open for thanksgiving week?

Dave's reply: Hi Ari, It all depends on how much snow we have to push up for features. If I had to guess,I think we'll have some stuff constructed though.

hey dave

is there going to be a park for the first week being open.... please tell me it will be better than the park we had open for the first week last year... im hoping more than just two rail and two boxes will be put out to ride im not asking for everything but something sick and at least worth the time

Dave's reply: hi local, It all has to do with available snow to push into terrain park features. Last season we had a late start, which turned into a record snowpack. What we opened with was pretty good for the amount of snow we had to work with. Pushing big features takes lots of snow.

Hi Dave,

As we do every year, we're coming up from Arizona for Thanksgiving. The last couple of Thanksgiving only Chairs 1 and 4 have been open. I ended up both years just skiing one day because the terrain was so limited and crowded. Also, we weren't comfortable putting our little ones in ski school because only part of 4 was open, resulting in a dangerous area where everyone was funneled into one narrow run. I realize that to a large degree you're at the mercy of mother nature, but anything you can do with the snowmaking to open at least a broader portion of 4, and Chair 5 would be great. Thanks!

Mike

Dave's reply: Hi Mike, Thank you for you blog comment.

Believe me, we'll open everything that we can possibly open for our valued guests from day 1. I'm looking at much more snow on the hill than we had at this time last year which is good. Its been warm and dry over the last week which has slowed down our snowmaking progress but the weather is forecast to turn colder and possibly wetter next week. We've got some good piles on Misty Maiden which will allow that run to open in addition to Village Bypass to relieve the "funnel" problem you experienced last time.

Our intent is to give our valued guests the best terrain and experience possible. Enjoy the holiday in Telluride with the family and travel safe.

Dave,

Everything looks awesome!!!

We own a condo in the MV and we are looking forward to the new terrain.  My kids have always loved to sled on the slopes near the Chondola (after skiing all day), last year you had signs posted saying no sledding.  They have been hitting that area with sleds since 2001, what gives?  Is there a place in the village they can sled this year?

Dave's reply: Hi Don, Sorry but the reason relates to your kids safety. We have snowmobiles, snowcats, high pressure hoses, and electrical cords strung out over the Meadows for snowmaking at this time of year on the Meadows run (after we close for skiing). It's just not appropriate. Thank you for understanding.

Well now, since the Jeep Tour has been cancelled, will we be able to use all that snow, reserved for that event, for the half pipe?

Dave's reply: I don't like the location of the half pipe and it gets very little use. The parks seem to be the draw for freestyling. We're evaluating the options still.

Tom said:

Dave,

Can you elaborate on Charles' inquiry regarding the transceiver gate? Seeing as the new lift terminal is just below the bear creek access point, what is the ski resort doing to maximize awareness/minimize risk to unsuspecting, ill-prepared costumers? I don't think simply stating that "you are now leaving the ski area" encompasses the gravity and dangers of skiing in the preserve. How will this apply if/when the lowers are gated? This is a major concern to a large contingent of the community.

Otherwise, bang up job on the lift and GH1. Is the revelation lift going to be mapped as chair 15?

Dave's reply: Hi Tom, you may not fully understand this issue, let me help.

Backcountry gates are the Forest Service's initiative, not the ski areas. The ski company's role and responsiblity is for operation within the ski area boundary, not outside the ski area, nor is it the ski company's obligation to qualify or manage people's personal decision to go through a FS backcountry access point/gate, period.

I talked with the Forest Service just yesterday about this. In that meeting, I asked if they were going to consider transceiver activated gates. They are not planning to install them. They have determined that the language on the sign which notifies people to the fact they are leaving the ski area through a backcountry access point/gate and that they are responsible for themselves in the backcountry is appropriate.

Your fotos of the new terrain are KILLING us!  AND THANK YOU FOR THE SAFETY BARS AND FOOTRESTS ON CHAIR 9.

Dave's reply: Hi Swede, we've not cut any trees around Alpino Vino. I'm sure you'll be happy with the experience. True, the hut is located in a forest off the See Forever run but the menus and service should be excellent :)

As we all know, we go to Daylight "Stupid" Time early this year on March 8.  This is a problem for skiing.  Since the crusty, spring snow often doesn't soften until noon or 1:00, that now means it will be 1:00 or 2:00 before things soften up, effectively shortening by an hour the best skiing of the day.  Therefore, I urge Telluride, and all ski areas to adjust their lift hours to 10:00 to 5:00 during March.

Dave's reply: March is also one of the heaviest snowstorm months of the ski season in Southwest Colorado. Later in the month we usually adjust our hours due to the wonderful spring corn. Thanks for your input.

Hey Dave, the mountain and the new lift look awesome!  I agree with the poor location of the half pipe.  It gets too much sun on one side and no sun on the other.  Just a suggestion but it would perform much better near the chair 5 area.  A lot more north and north west facing aspects.  The lower part of Polar Queen would make an ideal location.  Also if the mountain decides on a better place to put it, cutting it into the earth during the summer would allow it to open sooner and use much less man-made snow.  Many other resorts have had success building their pipes in this manor.  Thanks for the feedback and I can't wait to hit the slopes next week.

Dave's reply: Hi Adam, You are correct that it needs to point north and that it would be better if it was in-ground. Thanks for your input and comments - always appreciated.

Dave's reply: We're opening on Thursday, November 27th - not Wednesday. The snowmaking system has been working very well during the night. I'll be posting a new blog soon regarding which runs but we'll likely have Village Express and the Chondola running for opening day. I don't expect a delay.

2 So I guess no donation day this year? Just making sure season passes will be valid for turkey day skiing.

Have a happy Thanksgiving and prey for snow

Changes, changes.  I agree, Dave, that some of the changes you've made have been great.  However, it seems a little too much, a little too fast.  The clincher for me, is "naming the lifts".  I mean, Lift 9 is "Lift 9".  Chair 4 "Village Express"??  Come on. Not that I'm stuck back in the day, but I'm predicting a sell-out to the corp that owns Vail, and all the other blah, blah resorts.  Haven't gotten my season pass yet, so I'm not sure what the "rules" are this year, but I'm waiting for the day that they tell me "no hats", "no funny faces", "no dogs in the picture".  We're just losing that special something. Sad.

Dave's reply: Now Mike, don't worry too much. It's bad for your heart :O

Lifts should have names - what's in a number anyway? "Sunshine Express" sounds much more fun that "Chair 10", IMHO.

P.S. we're not selling to Vail, that's some weird local rumor.

TGR said:

Well when locals see Vail Resorts vehicles in town, like last week, it doesn't seem like such a weird rumor. It is common talk in town that all the improvements you have made are just to sell the resort off. Personally I would hate to see that happen.

So what's the word on the pipe for this year? Yes or no?

On a positive note, can't wait to ski GH#1! Very cool!

Oh and LET IT SNOW!!!

Dave's reply: Hi TGR, Again - we're not talking with buyers - Vail or anyone else. No meetings have occured with VR and TSG at all.

TSG is all about being a part of making Telluride/Mtn. Village the best that it can be. We have a long-term mindset and are very interested in playing a responsible role in helping to create a sustainable and vibrant place to live, work, and play. I hope the improvements we've made recently demonstrate to the community we're serious about that.

The VR vehicle you saw was their Environmental Manager who was in Telluride for a Pinhead presentation on greening ski areas. That took place at the museum last week.

Regarding the pipe, we have not made any final decisions. I do know that I'm not in favor of the location where it has been located in the past. It faces east/west, so it has a sun wall and shade wall all the time. It's also not steep enough there. As I told 100 returning ski instructors today at their orientation, we're also excited about returning that run to a low-pitch bump run. They need that for teaching purposes.

Enjoy the new terrain this season! Thanks for your comments, questions, and supportive attitude.

And yes, LET IT SNOW!

Hi Dave,

We've been coming to Telluride from Bermuda for 8 years now, bought a house in Norwood 7 years ago and then another in Ski Ranches. We try to make it out three or four times a year...the plan is to one day just stay! One day....

We've watched different Telski operators come and go but gosh, in the past two years we've really seen enormous improvement in the ski area product and direction! Planning, consultation and execution have been excellent, especially in comparison with that used to be.

Whether it's the ski area maturing, or your direction (with great backup from your hardworking colleagues)or some combination of these and other factors, please keep it up. We see it and appreciate all your and your colleagues hard work.

See you all at Christmas!

I am a "new" local (I now know that 3 years in Telluride isn't considered any significant amount of time), but I have to say that the improvements and additional terrain coming this year are the best yet.  Revelation Bowl and Gold Hill #1 make me want to scream "H*LL YEAH!"  I can't wait to shred the whole mountain this year.

Keep up the good work!

Praying for feet upon feet of champagne powder!!!

Dave's reply: Hi Mark, I share your enthusiasm for the "new and improved" Telluride Ski Resort.

Collectively, all the initiatives we've launched will clearly transform the ski resort. It's a pretty big deal if you think about everything  ---  and I'm very proud of the Telski staff for all their great work this summer and fall in executing a huge project list. It's been quite a ride.

Looking forward, the various departments have been going through extensive orientation and training to prepare for the season. Everyone is very excited to welcome our guests, and to create an exceptional experience for our locals and visitors to enjoy.

At the end of the day, I really hope everyone enjoys the fruits of this labor. We've put our best foot forward.

Have a great season!

Dave's reply: I have to appreciate your passion!

Okay, I admit I've been a bit consumed with the day-to-day stuff helping my team get the ski area open on Thursday. Believe me, I love nothing more than taking the time to capture some digital images and composing an interesting blog.

I could delegate it, but then it wouldn't be "Dave's Blog" - I've always enjoyed doing it myself anyway. It's just plain fun and I really enjoy having a dialog with our on-line community.

I'll get with the program and update on opening day. Thanks for the push :)

Dave - Any chance with the storm coming in that Chair 5 will open? It's really not worth it if just 4 (and 1) is open. Thanks.

Dave's reply: Hi Mike, We'll have to wait and see what this storm delivers. I'm grateful that we're opening on our scheduled day. What we will have open tomorrow has a good base too. Think snow!

Hi Dave, wow, I always heard Telluride was a great ski area but never thought it was as cool as the pictures here show. I will definitly try to check it out. It just moved to the top of my must ski areas. We miss you here at Meadows, do you honor Meadows passe for old timesakes? Still waiting for snow here, have a great turkey day.

Dave's reply: Hi CB, I was talking with MHM about some sort of relationship for passholders out there but it never materialized. Hope you have the opportunity to visit Telluride someday soon. You'll love it. Hope it starts snowing soon out there!

Dave's reply: It depends on the snowmaking temps at night and natural snowfall. It's still early - it will come :)

Great job getting the mountain open.  Any chance that you will open some terrain further up the mountain this weekend.  I would imagine that the snow on lift 5 is looking pretty good.  I know it would make everyone very happy and really spread the crowd out.  Keep up the good work and great job on the Hop Garden.  George B. is doing a great job.

Dave's reply: Hi PH, I don't think we'll get Chair 5 (Polar Queen Express) for the weekend. Their still making snow up there and doing some grooming. Thanks for recognizing George Bigley for his work. That's very thoughtful. I agree, he's doing a great job.

Im coming up to Telluride the 19th through the 26th...... Can you give me an estimate what lifts will be open around christmas?

Dave's reply: Hi Brandon, It's really weather dependent, but based on history, much of the lift served terrain should/could be open by then.
