Preview of Chair 9

Hi Folks,

As many of you know, Chair 9 at Telluride Ski Resort is considered "Unmatched in North America" for big, long, steep, advanced runs. As you can see, the sky was getting dark with the approaching snow storm this afternoon:

I wanted to go check out how the conditions were looking in the Chair 9 pod today so I grabbed Jeff Proteau, VP - Mountain Operations plus some local 2 plankers from the Telluride Daily Planet to do a little product evaluation (PE) today. Here's a picture of Reilly Caps, Jeff Proteau, Matt Beaudin, and Nick Wolcott:

Here's Matt and Jeff tearing it up:

Your's truly with Matt looking on. The light was flat but the snow was sweet:

Patrol has been dealing with some avalanche activity in the pod:

Jeff was lovin' it:

Matt wanted to throw himself off these cliffs but had to restrain himself until we open:

We're not going to open the Chair 9 pod for the public until we get another good snowstorm, patrol does it's work, grooming does it's work, and the snow cures a bit. I want to make sure it's really good and stays that way - this is the way to go. It should be soon with this good initial base coverage and the weather forecast.

The NOAA weather forecast says:

...SNOW ACCUMULATIONS BEGIN TONIGHT AND INCREASE ON THURSDAY...
FOLLOWED BY A STRONGER STORM THAT WILL BRING SIGNIFICANT SNOW TO
THE MOUNTAINS THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY...

We received two big snow storms over the last two weekends. Let's make this weekend three in a row!

Feel free to post a comment, we love to hear from you! - Dave

Wow this new storm looks great. I have been running the models all day and by Monday morning it wouldn't be absurd to see over three feet of fresh snow. I can't wait till I get out there this March hope you enjoy.

Dave's reply: Hi Sam, Why wait until March? :)

Dave,

My family and I will be there next Wednesday.  My kids love the runs under lifts 10 and 11.  Any predictions for next week?

Can't wait to get there!

Dave's reply: Hi Adam, I looked at the lower part of Chair 10 yesterday, we really could use a good dump down there first. We'll have to see what happens. Stay tuned :)

Thanks for the blog Dave.  What is your forcast for next week?  I'm coming with a big group from Cal Poly.  Likely more terrain will open by Monday after this weekend's storms?

Why aren't we on your Event Calendar? Our group of 400 should mention a notice.  Looking forward to tearing it up.  Can't wait.

Dave's reply: Hi Fredric, Looks like nice cold temperatures next week with some sun and maybe some light snow. Let's hope for a good accumulation this weekend! I'll ask the mktg guys to post your group - you're right! Thanks for coming the Telluride!

Can you give a specific status of the unopened runs at T_Ride? For example: Runs below lift 10 are 90% prepared but needs additional 4 to 8 inches  to complete, Runs below 12, 13 14 are 100% ready but...

This way we are not asking for as much a prediction of the opening date for the runs as a status of the patient.

For me, this helps reduce the stress of the unknown. I will be arriving on Dec 15th, and am trying to console my kids over the present lack of terrain for them to ski, plus set their expectations for conditions once we arrive. It makes for a much happpier trip when we deal in real conditions and what it takes to have more runs available.

Dave's reply: Hi Bryan, I fully understand. Information/communication is a good thing. I'd like to see what this weekends storm brings (as it should change things if it comes in as forecast) and will post a new blog with additional detail. Stay tuned.

What's the prediction for next week, all the runs open? Let's hope so...

Dave's reply: Hi J, I'll update the blog after this storm later this weekend. Thanks!

I love the fact that you are promoting poaching (which I actually did today).  You are riding runs and showing this off to passholders that can't ride them. And yet, these are the very same people have paid the highest season pass price and day lift ticket rate in North America at a resort that does not offer amenities to match.

I hope everybody gets in the poaching mood and sincerely wish that you would figure out what you are really doing here. CEO — or are you just vacationing? Furthermore, I love the fact that you think you're a local...

Dave's reply: Hi slim, What are you talking about?

You have the right to hike from the bottom and ski the federal lands, as long as you are not interfering with resort operational activities within the TSG/Forest Service permit area, including avalanche control, snowmaking, grooming, lift operations, lift maintenance, etc.

If you ride TSG lifts for fee, and then choose to ignor our closures and/or rules, then there will be consequences. That's the way it works at all ski areas under Forest Service Special Use Permit.

In contrast, I have the right to ride any lift at any time and inspect closed areas on my skis, on foot, or in a vehicle to determine the appropriate time to open those areas for the public - that is part of my job. When I ski the area it is in the context of ski area administration. It is no different from when the Ski Patrol Department or the Forest Service is exercising their administrative responsibilities by skiing areas that are closed in order to perform work.

If you would like the responsibilities, authorities, and work of operating a ski area - please feel free to apply.

After skiing the Chair 9 pod yesterday, I think it's pretty close to opening, except that the lower groomed sections are very thin. I concluded that we need another good snowstorm before we put 1,800 people per hour on that lift. Hopefully that snow will come in the near future.

Maybe you would prefer I sit in my office and make important decisions regarding ski area operations - but that is just not my style - I like to see what is really happening on the mountain. The reason I bring media people along with me is to provide the public with a clear picture of the progression we go through to open the ski area. I've learned over the years that they are quite good at communications. I also work hard to provide regular communication regarding operational issues through this blog.

By the way, if you're going to be rude to me on the blog, at least have the honor to use your real name.

Thank you.

Dave's reply: Hi Tony, We've got a terrain park open now near Gorrono and will likely have additional features up by then. Don't forget the Oakleys!

Hello Dave,

My friends and I have decided to go ahead and help you out by skier compacting chair 9 for you before it opens at no charge to you.

That's right, you heard right. We are fully willing and able to do this important job so that the masses will have a nicely compacted area to recreate in.

I'll personally make sure that we compact Makem solid.

Within a few laps, my friends and I can get chair 9 looking like a teenage fast food workers face: full of perfectly round bumps that will have people marveling.

You might ask: what's in it for us?

Glad you might ask.

What's in it for us is the satisfaction that we are helping you as well as everyone else out simply for the greater good of our community and nothing else.

My friends and I are here to help.

Let us help you tomorrow. Act now, think later. Join us if you like.

Thanks,

It's 7:00 AM Friday 12/7 and the ski report on the phone is giving Thursday's info.  Channel 9 News says T-ride got 4", Channel 2 says 21"!  The Telski web page says 9" 24-hrs, 8" 48-hrs, 5" 7-days.  The top of Lift 6 snow-tel web info says 6" in 24 hrs.  So what is the straight scoop and is there a way to get all this info coordinated?  I coming skiing anyway but it would be helpful to have reliable information.  Thanks!

Dave's reply: Hi Christopher, I don't know where Channel 2 got 21" - I saw that this morning also. Up at the Chair 6 site it does show 6" that's the one I believe - although only a few inches down at the village this morning (lower elevation). It's starting to snow harder now though. We'll try and figure out the differences and correct that for the future. Thanks!

Hi Dave.  Lovin' the blog!  What's up with "Slim"? (I think he's bitter...) I for one think that more CEO's should get up close and personal with what it is they are overseeing.  I really enjoy the pics of the runs and the progress being made, a bit of a "behind the scenes" look.

We come to Telluride as much as possible, we live in Arizona but also have a vacation home in Dolores, CO, purchased specifically so that we could ski Telluride often in the winter, and ride the motorcycle around the mountains in the summer.

One of the things that we really love about Telluride is that it is "easy" to ski there... park the car, get picked up by a golf cart, get taken to the Gondola, get tickets, get on the lift, SKI!  And when your tired from a great day on the slopes, there is someone there to help carry your skis up the one flight of stairs to the gondola.  Oh yeah, we love Gorrono's mid mountain bar, too!  Can't wait to check out the new wine bar.

We'll be spending Christmas in Dolores this year, and hope to get in lots of good skiing in Telluride!  Come on snow!!!

Brenda & Tony Down

Dave's reply: Hi Brenda and Tony, Thanks for your post - I agree, Telluride is a nice hassle free resort. The new wine bar has run into some permitting snags but we'll keep working on it for the future. Gorrono Saloon will have to suffice - what a wonderful place! Hope you can spend many days in Telluride this year!

Hey Dave

So I've been lapping 5 and 6 the past week and I've noticed that there are no Port-o-johns up there.  Where are they? Are they just coming back late this year? It's a huge hassle to have to go all the way down to the bottom of 4 just to pee...and even more so once 12 and 14 open.  Thanks for having this blog!

Dave's reply: Hi Cal, They're gross - therefore were eliminated (pardon the pun). Remember, we have restrooms at the top of Chair 12 over by High Camp Warming Hut, over near Giuseppe's, at Gorrono Ranch, and another near the angle station of the gondola.

Hey Dave,

I must say I read your blog religiously since I found it.  I haven't encountered a ski area that offers such an inside look.  Way to go.  You should ski all the unopened runs you can, it's your right, and entertaining for MOST of us.  I enjoy watching a CEO take such an active and personal role in a business.  Makes me want to come to Telluride instead of anywhere else.  Do you have any tips on cheaper/affordable lodging that has good access to slopes (that is, within walking distance)?

Dumping on the northern front range,

16 inches all over,

Good luck to the new season, and maybe we can take a little race through the NASTAR gates! I Love your blog!!

Dave's reply: Hi Jimmy, Sorry to tell you this but due to the Jeep King of the Mountain event on Lower Misty Maiden, the Nastar course will not open until December 17th. The ice skating pond at Mountain Village has been prepared by the Town of Mountain Village and looks good. The Town of Telluride is also operating the indoor ice skating rink at the park. Thanks.

Dave's reply: Hi Keith, Here are a few ideas. I'm thinking she could go to the Atmoshere Spa or Golden Door Spa in the Peaks Resort (all wives like that one). Rent snowshoes from Telluride Sports at Mountain Village, walk downhill (off the side of the ski run) to Big Billies and ride the free Chondola back up. Rent some nordic skis and check out the trails in town park in the Town of Telluride. Go ice skating at the Hanley rink in Telluride. Galleries, shopping, heli-skiing. Drive to Ouray for a day at the outdoor hot springs pools. Pack a fancy lunch, ride to the top of the free gondola, walk a few hundred yards up by the top of Chair 7 and meet you for an outdoor picnic lunch overlooking Telluride. Get some custom footbeds made for her ski boots from Andreas at Telluride Sports in Mountain Village (that will take several hours and she'll really like them).

Enjoy!

Hi Dave,

The anxiety of possibly missing the opening of chair 9 the past couple of days is beginning to wear on people. We've all been circling chair 6 in anticipation of 9 opening and the place is getting beat by all the traffic. People are staying on the mountain, shirking domestic duties and forgoing rest because nobody wants to miss the opening couple of runs on 9. I totally understand that you guys need to be ready and you're doing your best to get there.

My question is, can you announce when you guys are planning to finally open 9 the night before on your blog? That way we could all make sure we do laundry, stay home and rest, etc. the night before.

I've been harvesting snow on chair 6 the last few days and I'm beat. I'd like to stay home and get some things done and rest but everyday I'm going up in case 9 opens. Rumors on when have been running rampant but they all seem to indicate tomorrow! For the last three days the rumor has been the same: tomorrow possibly. Dave, we all need some rest, can you let us know YES or NO each night on your blog? Or you could maybe pick a day coming up when you want to open 9. Either way, the anticipation has been maddening and any heads up you could give us would be greatly appreciated by all the people in town afflicted with Powder Syndrome. It's no laughing matter.

Thanks for listening,

Steve Foster

Hi Dave,

i read the comment where it sounded like you said we can hike up as long as we dont "interfere" with operations.  Dont want to get in trouble, so i want to be clear - can we hike up See Forever to top of 9?  Life is short and winter is even shorter, especially when there is snow to be skied by the common, yet pass-holding, man!

Best regards, and i hope you are enjoying Telluride!

DAVE, It sure is your right to inspect the terrain for safety but where were your helmet and googles Dave. Clearly, you are sending a mixed message to pass-holders. If 9 is indeed to dangerous to ski because it needs more work and snow why aren't you protecting yourself? We all understand the business side ski area operations. If you believe that saving lift 9 for Jeep events and Arizona days is the way to go, let us know and we can get behind you  even if it is at the expense of lift 6. However, you current reasoning for the delay doesn't hold much weight with those who have been skiing here for years. We have all seen 9 open with far less snow than it has now. Honesty, is your best friend if you have any interest in garnering the respect of locals. Don't forget that we see past the smoke show.

Dave's reply: I've stated my case. Maybe you'll recognize the benefits to this approach should we hit a dry spell. Thank you.

Clearly, a honest and candid response is beyond your scope of operations thanks for the dodge Dave.
