Check out this forecast for the weekend

Hi Folks,

OMG! (oh my God) look at this latest San Juan Mountain update from NOAA. No sleep tonight!

...MAJOR WINTER STORM TO BRING WIDESPREAD HEAVY SNOW TO THE REGION
THIS WEEKEND...

.UPDATE...FORECASTERS CONFIDENCE CONTINUES TO RISE WITH THIS STORM
AS VERY MOIST SUBTROPICAL AIR CONTINUES TO STREAM NORTHWARD INTO THE
SOUTHWESTERN STATES. BRAND NEW 00Z MODEL RUNS CONTINUE BEING VERY
AGGRESSIVE WITH SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OVER MOST OF OUT MOUNTAINS...WITH
AREAS ALONG AND SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 70 HIT THE HARDEST STARTING
MIDDAY FRIDAY AND CONTINUING INTO SATURDAY NIGHT. SEE LITTLE REASON
TO CONTINUE ON WITH THE WATCH AS WARNING LEVEL SNOWFALL WILL OCCUR
WITH THIS STORM. POTENTIAL FOR OVER FOUR FEET OF SNOW NOT OUT OF
THE QUESTION...ESPECIALLY FOR THE SOUTHWEST SAN JUANS...WHERE 24
HOURS OF MOIST SOUTHWEST FLOW...COMBINED WITH STRONG JET DYNAMICS
BRING US OUR HEAVIEST SNOWS IN QUITE SOME TIME.  ALSO TAKING NOTE
THAT THE SYSTEM APPEARS TO BE JUST A TAD COLDER THAN EARLIER
THINKING.

Do a little dance, sing a little song, get down tonight,, get down tonight...

Hello Dave,

You've noticed we might get a nominal amount of snow this weekend. I've been eyeballing this wad of moisture sideways and also think there's a slim possibility we might get a little bit of snow.

I know you're excited about the forecast but don't get too excited. You have to be mellow in these situations and pretend nothing's going to happen. Too much anticipation can cause storms to go around the Telluride region. If we pretend we could care less if it ever snows, the storms will likely pound us to get our attention. Mother Nature can be so fickle.

In the off chance we do get enough snow to open additional terrain, any idea what might open? Say we got two feet, would nine open ? Gold Hill? 6?

What if we got three feet? If we got four feet you could bomb Palmyra and let people ski it from the top. That would be nice.

Just skiing chair 9 would be nice as well as the Gold Hill lift; that would be great.

Thanks in advance for any info,

Biff Baswell

Dave's reply: Ah, a superstitious skier. If I talk to much about Chair 9, Gold Hill, Palmyra, they may never open :)

This is what happens when you open the ski area a few days early on the day that kids have off from school for parent teacher conferences!  That's good ski kamra, and good karma begets good snow.

I'm watching the storm from afar, but couldn't be happier.  Make sure you get at least a few turns in in the fresh snow.  Bring your camera to take some pictures for the blog and call it work.

See you in a few weeks...

Dave's reply: Karma, superstition, luck - those are things I believe in.

I'll be waxing my 320cm GS skis. Not that I'm anticipating anything.

Dave's reply: 320cm - nice!

My powder skis aren't ready.  :(  Guess I'll just have to muddle through.  ;-)

Do you think they'll miss me if I don't show up for work all next week?

Dave's reply: Humm, it depends if you work for TSG?  :)

Dave, it's awesome to see someone who loves servicing skiers helping Telski. Otoh, I've archived your beliefs, and I'm sure I'll remind you of them soon.

First of all, let me thank you for this blog and for keeping it updated.  As a senior at Ouray High School, i love going skiing, but knowing what the conditions were like and what was open/groomed was always hit or miss.  Because of this blog, i think this year will be much different.

Anyways, i was wondering, if a certian hypothetical storm were to dump a large ammount of hypothetical snow (lets just say 2 feet), say, today and tomorrow, would Telluride have the capacity and time to manage that snowfall to get some more lifts open in time for Sunday?  Hypotheticly speaking of course.

As well, don't forget to tell people if they are looking for a cheaper option to staying in telluride that they can stay in Ouray and ski Telluide at 40% off (i think thats still happening.  Plus, amazingly enough, we have some things that telluride doesn't;  The Ouray Hot Springs Pool (the largest and best on the western slope, the Ouray Ice Park (largest commertial Ice Climbing Venue in North America).

But most of all, i'm concerned with this hypotheitical storm :)

Dave's reply: Hypotheitically speaking, certainly the Chondola / Meadows runs and maybe Lift 5. We'll see.

Thanks for the updates.  If the storm is coming with all of that snow, why does the forecast your website keep saying sunny?  Am I missing something?

Dave's reply: Hi Keith. I don't see where it says it's sunny. Maybe hit refresh??

Please tell us that snow is falling.... the webcams just don't show enough :)

Dave's reply: Hi Scott, We've only received a few inches so far today. The front is taking it's sweet time getting here. Below is the NOAA update which just came out this afternoon. We all hope it's true.

...MAJOR STORM SYSTEM WILL BRING MUCH NEEDED PRECIPITATION TO THE
FORECAST AREA THIS EVENING THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY. EXPECT VERY HEAVY
MOUNTAIN SNOW...

.SHORT TERM...FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY...
MODELS CONTINUE TO AGREE BRINGING A STRONG...VERY MOIST...SYSTEM OVER

Hi Dave,

Go to www.tellurideskiresort.com and look at the front page section indicating either "weather" or "snow report".  (Just below Dave's Blog) It has the weather as sunny and cloudy.  Am I missing something or is there really a monster storm coming???

Thanks.

Keith

Dave's reply: Ahh, I see it now. That's an error on our site - thank you for pointing it out. See the latest forecast right above in my reply to Scott.

If the temps stay at 4ºC (39ºF in your money) then it'll be a miracle if it does anything but rain.....we are traveling 5000 miles to get to you, we could have had this in Europe....how depressing.....

Dave's reply: Hi Julian, At 7:00am Saturday morning it is 29 degrees F at my house in Mountain Village and snowing. It did rain on the lower slopes last night and finally cooled off and turned to snow after midnight. A good amount of snow fell in the higher elevations. I'll update the blog later today. Thank you.

On the TSG home page, there appears to be a descrepancy in the snowfall totals; shouldn't the 5-day total be more than the 24 or 48 hour reports?

Dave's reply: Yes, it's all messed up. We'll get it fixed. Sorry.

Hey Dave,  Your snow report has shown 12" in the last 7 days all week as the last storm was last Friday/Saturday.  Today the report shows 10" from this storm but only 12" in the last 7 days.  Who does the math at Telco?  Bill

Dave's reply: Yes, it's all messed up. We'll get if fixed. Sorry.

Dave, the blog is great & speculation about the weather is as old as time; however, a real trail status page would be even better at this point.  There used to be a very detailed one which explitely denoted which runs were open and which were closed.  We might start seeing enough snow to open up more terrain soon, but it seems this important info is buried in the Prance interface & I'm not sure if it's being given the attention it deserves?

Dave's reply: Hi Eric, Seems easy to find - click on Current Conditions and then click on Grooming Report. Did you find it?

Dave, thanks for the reply ... might be a case of you know what's what, but the interface is kinda ambiguous.  The key is very blury, so it's hard to tell if runs listed are just the groomed ones or the complete list of all that are open.  Might not make a difference at the moment if it's all one & the same; however, will be important over the next week or so (assuming more terrain opens).  Thanks again, Eric

Dave's reply: Let me look at it again from that perspective. Thank you for your input Eric!

Well,

Last night, Mother Nature.  Asking snowmaking to step aside so that she could strut her stuff.  There was 11 inches at the love shack and its still dumping.  I think this will breath some life into the King Of the Mountain Event.  Not that there was any concern. : )...

Dave! You the MAN...........I said all we need you to have is 5 feet by New Years. At 36" right now, you are on track. I can't believe it, see what some new management can do? Well done!

Maybe we should be raising the bar here? Let's go five feet by Christmas with another 18" of powder by New Years.

Dave's reply: I'm good with that ;-)

Anyway, it's all good. Thanks for your all your responses!

Later
