Opening Day - November 28!

Hi Folks,

It was a beautiful day today and everyone was so happy to make some turns at Telluride! Here is a picture of our guests getting ready at the top of Chair 4:

The Freestyle Terrain Park Dept. set up a nice little rail park for the kids who were out of school today on parent/teacher conference day:

Village Bypass has really good coverage - no rocks to be found:

Snowmaking on Misty Maiden continued all day due to the favorable temps:

We've been watching a potential snow storm coming our way. If you want the technical details, here they are:

PATTERN CHANGE WILL BEGIN TO TAKE SHAPE THURSDAY NIGHT WITH THE
FLOW BACKING TO THE SOUTHWEST AS A TROUGH MOVES ASHORE OVER THE
PACIFIC NORTHWEST AND A CLOSED LOW OFF THE BAJA COAST BEGINS TO
ADVECT DEEP SUBTROPICAL MOISTURE OVER THE SOUTHWEST STATES.
INCREASING MOISTURE OVER THE AREA AND WARM ADVECTION EXPECTED ON
FRIDAY AS THE BAJA LOW GETS PULLED NORTH BY THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
TROUGH AND THEY BEGIN TO MERGE. KEPT CHANCE POPS ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS
AND VALLEYS NEAR THE FOUR CORNERS WITH SOUTHWEST FLOW PROVIDING SOME
LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE INTO THE AREA AND INCREASING JET SUPPORT
ALOFT. MODELS SUGGESTING THE BULK OF THIS SYSTEM WILL ARRIVE FRIDAY
NIGHT SO HELD OFF ON WINTER STORM WATCH FOR NOW BUT IT DOES LOOK LIKE
THE MAKINGS FOR A POTENTIAL WIDESPREAD HEAVY SNOW EVENT THIS
WEEKEND.

.LONG TERM...FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY...
MODELS ARE STILL ADVERTISING A STRONG STORM SYSTEM FOR FRIDAY NIGHT
THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT. TWO TROUGHS WILL PHASE WITH THE SOUTHERN
TROUGH PUMPING MOISTURE NORTH INTO THE CWA AS IT EJECTS NORTHEAST THE
SAME TIME THE NORTHERN TROUGH DIGS OVER THE INTER MTN WEST. ABUNDANT
MOISTURE IS EXPECTED OVER EASTERN UT AND WESTERN CO. SOUTHWESTERLY
MID AND UPPER FLOW WILL INTERACT WITH THE MTNS PROVIDING GOOD
OROGRAPHIC LIFT. A STRONG SURFACE LOW ALSO FORMS AND STRENGTHENS OVER
THE CWA. SNOW LEVELS SHOULD REMAIN FAIRLY HIGH AT FIRST AS THIS FLOW
PATTERN BRINGS WARMER AIR. THE ZERO DEGREES AT 700 MB FOR FRIDAY
NIGHT RUNS FROM THE FOUR CORNERS TO THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE CWA.
TEMPERATURES DROP ON SATURDAY AS THE SECOND TROUGH MOVES EAST BRINING
INCREASED INSTABILITY RESULTING IN INCREASE SNOW RATES. THE EC AND
THE GFS ARE IN FAIRLY GOOD AGREEMENT ON PLACEMENT AND TIMING OF THIS
SYSTEM. THE NAM IS SLOWER BRINGING THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE LOW
NORTHEAST. BEST CHANCES OF PRECIP WITH CURRENT TIMING ARE FRIDAY
NIGHT AND SATURDAY AND THIS SYSTEM COULD BRING THE MOST SNOW WE HAVE
SEEN THIS YEAR ESPECIALLY FOR THE SOUTHERN MTNS. AFTER THIS STORM A
RIDGE BUILDS AND TEMPERATURES SLOWLY WARM.

Let's keep our fingers crossed! Feel free to post a comment, we love to here from you!

- Dave

Great opening! Thank you & your team very much for putting in the extra effort to get things rolling! We need the vitality in Mountain Village for sure. It is really great to see people around & enjoying our fantastic mountain! Question regarding snow making, do you think that you will have enough resources (water) to continue to produce through the season? Obviously I understand this is like predicting the weather, but are you in line w/ the amount of production you would typically be doing this time of year or have you had to increase output due to Mother Nature being late? Either way looking forward to a great season!

Dave's reply: Hi Jarrad, Yes-it was a completely different feel in the village today! What a great opening day - all credit goes to the highly skilled staff at Telluride Ski and Golf. We're doing fine on water as it's still early. Our system is simply more efficient with the improvements we made this summer. Ma Nature can put some icing on the cake too!

Hi Dave,

Me and my 3 buddies are driving upto telluride next thursday from arizona. we see the weather conditions and the trails that are open. Will there be more trails open by next friday when we get there we don't want to be dissapointed.

Dave's reply: Hi Piere, Have you been following the weather forecast? It looks like we may get a significant storm coming from your area starting Friday afternoon. Certainly that would help us open more terrain. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Okay, this is not fair. I'm sitting in a windowless office in Florida (which is beautiful, but over 80 degrees today)wishing I was in Telluride.

I realized after my first ski trip to Telluride (and Crested Butte)that I was meant to be a ski bum in the Rockies.  Oh, Well. I'll have to settle for our annual trip which is 75 days away!! Yeah, Yeah

Dave, Thanks for the constant updates.  See you in 75 days.

Dave's reply: Hi Julie, 75 days and counting! Stay in touch.

GOOD MODEL AGREEMENT ON A MAJOR PRECIPITATION EVENT THIS WEEKEND. AN
UPPER LEVEL TROUGH CURRENTLY OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST AND AN UPPER
LOW OFF THE COAST OF BAJA WILL MERGE TOGETHER AND BRING WIDESPREAD
MOUNTAIN SNOW AND LOWER ELEVATION RAIN AND SNOW TO EASTERN UTAH AND
WESTERN COLORADO.

THE BAJA LOW WILL EJECT INLAND FRIDAY AND MOVE ACROSS THE FOUR
CORNERS AREA FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY MORNING WHILE ADDITIONAL
ENERGY DIGS SOUTH ALONG THE WEST COAST. STRONG LARGE SCALE ASCENT
WILL DEVELOP OVER THE AREA LATE FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT AS A LEFT
EXIT AND RIGHT ENTRANCE REGION UPPER JET COUPLE DEVELOPS OVER THE
AREA. STRONG SOUTHWEST FLOW WILL ADD A ROBUST OROGRAPHIC COMPONENT
TO THE FORCING ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST SLOPES OF THE SOUTHERN
MOUNTAINS WHICH WILL BE HARDEST HIT BY THIS STORM. ADDITIONALLY...A
SURFACE LOW IS PROGGED TO TRACK NORTHEAST ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA
SATURDAY ALONG A BAROCLINIC ZONE ENHANCING LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE.
SNOWFALL TOTALS IN THE SOUTHWEST SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS OF 2 TO 3 FEET
LOOK REASONABLE BY SUNDAY MORNING ACROSS AREAS FAVORING SOUTHWEST

OF CONCERN WITH THIS RELATIVELY WARM SUBTROPICAL AIRMASS BEING
TRANSPORTED TOWARD THE AREA. AFTER THE BAJA WAVE EJECTS ACROSS THE
AREA THE COLDER UPPER TROUGH AXIS WILL MOVE ACROSS THE AREA
SATURDAY NIGHT WITH FLOW VEERING TO THE WEST PROVIDING BETTER
OROGRAPHIC FORCING FOR THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS WHILE COLD ADVECTION
INCREASES.

Way to go, Dave!  Your snow dances are evidently working.  22 days and counting for my next trip up there which will cap off almost eight weeks that at least some part of my family has been in Telluride over the last year.  Crazy I tell ya!  Keep the updates coming.  I am enjoying the heck out of them.

Dave's reply: Hey Scott, 22 and counting - I love it! Bring on the fluff and bumps!

Dave's reply: Hi Ryan, Let's do it this way -- check back in to the blog after a few days -- I think we'll be more informed up here then. I sure hope this forecast comes true, I'm starting to shake over it.. :)

Yo Dave!  I give out mad props to the park crew, for putting up the early season jibbs!  They're quite epic, and my park rat kids are having tons of fun on them!

I'm a 54 years young shredder, and my daughter taught me how to jibb the mattress box today!!!  I have one request...the box is quite sticky, and if you could have the park crew grease it up a bit that would be quite groovey!!!!  The mattress box is sick, by the way...thanks for buying all these sweet new  boxes!  I'm sure the park rats are going to enjoy them!!!

Peace!!

Dave's reply: You crack me up ;-)>

If you like those rails and boxes, you will really like the new Planet Tools that have not been set yet! Just wait..
