Telluride Ski & Golf CEO, Dave Riley, discusses all things Telluride.

Opening date announced

November 23, 2007

Hi Folks,

Telluride Ski Resort will open for lift served skiing and snowboarding on November 30, 2007!

A snow storm did roll in late last night as predicted and we've received about 5-7 inches of snow as of noon today. It's snowing moderately on and off today but that should end late this afternoon. It sure is nice to see winter arriving!

We're still making snow 24 hours a day and with the cold tempuratures over the last 3 nights we've made more snow than over the last 3 weeks. It sure has helped.

Some people have posted blog comments asking if we'll open earlier. The reason we are waiting until 11/30 is that we still have about 700 yards of snowmaking to accomplish at the top of Chair 4. We're just finishing up the areas on lower Boomerang and below Gorrono Ranch on Village Bypass also. While the natural snow we received certainly helped, it's not enough to ski on yet. We should be able to complete the snowmaking priority route off Chair 4 by 11/30 though.

The next chance for a snowstorm is the middle of next week. At this point, it looks pretty interesting and aggressive. We'll have to wait and see.

Thank you for all your questions and comments on the blog. We love to hear from you!

Enjoy! - Dave

ohhh yes parise the lord but when you say you will open on the 30th are you 100% positive you will be open by then and about how many runs and lifts will be open...

Dave's reply: Hi Alyan, Well - I suppose something could go wrong but we're confident at this point for a 11/30 opening. We'll nail down the exact acres later in the week. Think "more snow"!

Dave, Thanks for the updates and the blog.  Great idea.  With the lack of snow lately my wife and I were starting to get nervous for our end of January 08 trip!...Well not really, but great to hear you guys are starting to get powder stashes piling up.  We can't wait to get out there in a couple of months.

Dave's reply: Hi Mark, Thanks for commenting. Yes, it's really nice to see a blanket of the good stuff on the ground. It's filling in nicely. Thanks for choosing Telluride for your January ski trip! Stay in touch.

Dave,

I think it was very smart to delay opening until you can get enough terrain to ski.  A fifty foot wide single run is not an opening. Look forward to seeing you in the gates on NASTAR this season.

Dave's reply: Hi Reid, We certainly want to provide a good experience for our guests on opening day. You know the old saying, "good things come to people who wait."

Dave, I read the announcement and blog entry. While I understand wanting to open with everything in place and covered well. We will be in T'ride all week with not alot to do if the lifts are closed. Is Friday a difinite opening or may we still have a chance at an earlier opening for those of us at the resort waiting? If not, any recommendations of other things to do with with 3 young girls during the week? Thanks again for the responses.

Dave's reply: Hi Tony, I doubt we'll be opening with everything - it will still be a partial opening. If we recieved enough natural snow which adequately covered the remaining area below the top of Chair 4 so we could make that connection I'd consider opening earlier. I just doubt that will happen based on the forecast.

Regarding other activities, have you and the girls been to the hot springs in Ridgeway yet? That would be a good day. Snowshoeing off the top of the gondola? Hike up Bear Creek Preserve? Trail ride with Rowdy? Telluride Historical Museum? Girls spa extravaganza? Ice skating? And of course - shopping for clothes (my daughter always goes for that) :)

I appologize for not providing the main attraction - skiing! We'll be open as soon as possible. Thank you.

Well that’s good I suppose…. It is hard for me to stay optimistic by now since I’m arriving next week and it’s still up in the air if it will open and if t will then probably with VERY limited terrain… Will you offer any break on the lift prices?

Thanks for the updates!

Dave's reply: Hi Bart, yes we will discount the tickets. We're going to wait until next week to set prices when we see what terrain we'll have open. - It's still snowing!

WOW!!!!!!!!! EVERY LIKE FIVE MINUTES I KEEP LOOKING AT THE weather and right now it says that so far youve gotten 11 inches of snow and im not there so i cant tell but it looks like there may be enough time to get some more before it passes all the way through and what is really amazing is that the is a 21 INCH BASE I NO THAT, THAT IS NOT VERY MUCH BUT IN ACTUALITY THATS A TON BECAUSE LAST WEEK THERE WAS LIKE NONE  thanks for keeping use updated will there be another blog entry tomorow

Dave's reply: Hi Alyan, that telemetry site is near the top of Chair 6 - there is more up there than down in the base area - but this is REALY good to see! Sure, I'll post another blog tomorrow :)

Hi Dave,

I know you were working all day today so probably couldn't 'take the pulse' of people in town, but I've got to tell you, the mood is decidedly brighter today!  So nice to see that fluffy white stuff again.  Telluride looks like it ought to this time of year.  Thank God, and phew!

Dave's reply: Hi Ann, Yes, I did notice that. It's amazing what snow can do to people!

When do you think the entire mountain will be open by?

Dave's reply: Hi Brad, Usually we have all the lifts open by the middle of December. Some of the real steep terrain like Black Iron Bowl may not open 'till later.

Hey Dave, how are you sir? i just had a quick question. Im going to be in Telluride Dec. 14th through the 21st with the Michigan State ski club, i have been snowboarding for 7 years but never out of the state of michigan. but anyways, iv been watching the weather in Telluride and clearly there has been a lack of snow up untill friday the 24th. im wondering if you have an idea of how much of the mountain will be open by then? im hopeing all. i know theres no way to know for sure, but reflecting back on past mid decembers what would you say? i looked up the 10 day forcast...i think it was the 10 day? and i saw that its suppsoed to rain the 27ish followed by a few days of snow.

Dave's reply: Hi Ryan, see by reply to Brad above. You should have a great time. As for rain, at this elevation, that is pretty rare in the winter. Those little picture forecasts are not very accurate.

It's spelled Ridgway, not Ridgeway. And that hot springs there is clothing optional, which may or may not be appropriate for young girls (probably not). Ouray Hot Springs is better for families, for sure.

Guests can also try a day trip to Mesa Verde or Hovenweep, two cultural sites that are awesome, or hiking in Moab at Canyonlands or Arches.

Dave's reply: Thanks for the suggestions, and warning!

Dave,

Ok all is well - a little dump with more to follow as always, but I took a little ding on changing dates through the incredulousness of my airline. Since I hold you entirely responsible for the lack of snow and rescheduled opening day – I find it only fair the first round at Gorrono’s in a few weeks be on you. . . .  :) Continue cheer throughtout the Thanksgiving holiday!

Dave's reply: Sounds like a deal :)  See you soon!
