November 22nd - opening update

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

I had an opportunity to go on a hike this morning and check out the snowmaking progress. It was nice and cold again last night and the snowmaking team did a great job.

Here is a picture of Village Bypass, just below the top of Chair 7, with Wilson Peak in the background. Wilson Peak is 14,246 feet tall and is located in the Lizard Head Wilderness.

Here is a picture of Upper Village Bypass, Chair 4, Wilson Peak in the center and Sunshine Mountain (12,930 feet) is on the left over the trees. Snowmaking is complete in this area. All that is left to do is for the cats to come in, spread the piles and groom it out.

Below is a picture of a SMI Super Polecat snowmaker. We have several different types of snowmaking machines but these babies really build a pile fast if the tempuratures are right.

Here's a SMI in front, with several Ratnik air/water guns behind. This whole stretch of Village Bypass had almost no snow on it yesterday.

Here is a picture of a HKD snowmaker. We have some really nice piles now on Boomerang.

Here is a picture of The Beach at the bottom of Chair 4. This pile is looking good enough to build a maze area.

The bottom line is that we are filling in the gaps on the priority route off Chair 4 very nicely. We have one fairly large gap on Upper Village Bypass from the top of Chair 4 down to the top of Chair 7. We won't be able to open this weekend but the probability of opening next week is very high now.

Now for the really good news. Check out the Snow Advisory that was posted this morning for our area:

Dave,

I'm coming in tomorrow with my three girls. 8,10, and 12 years old. With the weather system coming in and your great snowmaking !! Can we plan on skiing early next week ??  Thanks for your great work so far.

Dave's reply: Believe me, I want to make your girls and you happy more than anything. Let's see what happens with this forecast for tonight and tomorrow - that would sure help advance things. Check back to the blog Friday afternoon for another update. I think the odds are getting better and better. Thanks Tony!

Dave - Love the blog.  Thanks for taking the time to do it.  We got a dusting of snow last night in Chicago, and I'm praying for a dump in Telluride tonight/tomorrow!  Hey, I'm excited about the wine bar.  Good luck with the permitting. See you on the slopes!  - Greg

Dave's reply: Hi Greg, It's snowing real good this morning. I'll update the blog later today. Thanks!

The snowmaking pictures are great, but they aren't half as beautiful as the webcam pictures of all that fresh snow this morning.  We'll see you in a few weeks!

Dave's reply: Hi Jeff, Yes - the natural snow is a huge relief! This is sooo nice to see.

Got two inches of snow in Moab this morning, hope you are getting a whole lot more. This is the first real precip since September. Let's hope the weather tide has turned. Great job on the photo and blog, keep it up.

Dave's reply: Hi Zane, We've received about 5 inches since it started snowing late last night and it's still snowing moderately. Have a great weekend!

Dave, Tony again. I see all the great snow on the webcams. Do we now have a decent chance of an opening on Monday or Tuesday?  Thanks for the blog. I know you are busy these days and it's great to see a CEO who takes the time to respond to his guests.

Dave's reply: Hi Tony, I'll be posting a new blog this afternoon regarding the opening date. Stay tuned. Thanks!

It seems as thought you can smooth out those piles of man-made snow to at least open one or two beginner/intermediaet runs for this Saturday (tomorrow)...  This would be nice since there are a lot of people staying in town and at TMV for the Thanksgiving weekend.  Opening Sunday or Monday will not help those of us that have planned to be here Thursday, Friday and Saturday....

Can you commit to opening "something" up Saturday morning.

What say you!

Thanks, Jim

Dave's reply: Hi Jim. Unfortunately opening this weekend won't be possible. We still don't have enough snow for the first seven hundred yards down the run from the top of Chair 4. I'll explain more about this in the next blog I post today. Thank you for your question.

Dave's reply: Hi Ryan, see my reply to Jim above. Thank you.

I was wondering why the snow guns right on misty maiden are not on if they were on could they help open for this saturday. Our the snow guns at the top of lift 4 on right now so that 700 yards could be covered.

Dave's reply: Hi Ryan, good question. We only have so much water and air to push, so at this time, we're finishing up Village Bypass below Gorrono Ranch and from the bottom of Boomerang to the lower terminal of Chair 4. Once those areas are complete, we'll then move to the top for the final stretch. Essentially, the technical answer is that we need to expand our pumping capacity, air capacity, and electrical service to fully utilze the distribution system that is in place. We also need to increase our ability to recharge the storage ponds. We're working on a plan so that we can continue to improve our system during the summer of 2008. Where we really got behind this fall was with the warm tempuratures. The snowmaking crew has done a wonderful job over the last 3 nights since it got cold but it would have been nice to have some more favorable snowmaking conditions earlier in the month of November :)

Re: your first image of snowmaking ... best get your geography right, now that you live in Telluride.

That's not Mt. Wilson in the background, that's Wilson Peak. And Wilson Peak, Mt. Wilson and El Diente are all part of the "Wilson Range" of the San Juan Mountains; the San Miguel Range which you referred to is above Trout Lake.

Welcome to Telluride!

Dave's reply: Hi Thomas, pulled it right off the internet. Just goes to show that not everything on the internet is correct, including my blog :)
