November 21st - Opening update

Hi Folks,

Nice cold tempuratures moved in late yesterday. Honestly, last night was the first "real" snowmaking weather of the season - and it sure made a difference in our productivity.

Here are a few pictures from today:

The forecast is for continued cold tempuratures into Saturday, likely allowing for 24 hour snowmaking until Saturday morning. There is even a possibility of some natural snow Thursday night into Friday. That would be a welcome sight!

I'll update again over Turkey Day with more pictures and information on the progress made by our excellent snowmaking staff.

Thanks to everyone posting comments and checking back on the blog. Have a wonderful meal tomorrow!

Dave,

I am very concerned that the coal-burning power plants

in the Farmington area are having an impact on the snow. The locals say this time of year there is usually snow, here, in the Shiprock and Burnham area.

Apparently, the filters have been removed from the power plants that made the effect less intense in the past.

A third power plant is being proposed, with potentially even more impact. Some of the Navajo people are resisting. They have set up a camp to stop their work, and are talking with politicians and interested environmentalists. The Sierra Club is getting involved. These people are making some headway. They need more support. They have a website: www.dooda-desert-rock.net. Dooda means 'no' in Navajo.

The big business of coal-burning power plants could be

confronted by the big business of Ski Resorts! To do

nothing will be disastrous to Telluride, one of the

most beautiful places in Colorado.

Let us help stop this affront to man and nature!

Respectfully,

Leslie Olivas

Dave's reply: Thanks for the information Leslie. I have heard a little about this and will look into it more.

Dave,

Thanks for posting my comment.

I very much hope your influence can help in this matter of coal-burning power plants, and the Navajo's who are working to resist it.

The snow-making is awesome!

I'm looking forward to opening day!

Keep On,

Leslie Olivas

Dave's reply: Thank you Leslie. Yes, I am going to look into this. Enjoy the holiday weekend.
